This is actually a very attractive sundail with a pretty horrible name.
The coin-sized sundial. Timing from light and shadow. As a pendant or as a pocket tool with integral compass. Titanium with fold-out shadow caster in gold. Time display on the front. Sun data on the back.

This excellent condition Omega features the innovative and supremely accurate F300 Tuning Fork movement. Holding a place in history as the first electronic watches it is based on the Bulova Accutron movements. Much preferred by the Omega collector due to the fact that the second hand sweeps round smoothly unlike the jerky action of the inferior quartz watches.

Hello, all,
I’ve been thinking about this for quite a while and I’d like to do it. I’d like to collect a book of watch essays for publication called “About Time.” It would be a vanity project for us watch geeks, but I think we could also raise a bit of interest in the mainstream world as well. I’d like to propose the following:
Send me your best essays, 500-5000 words, on all aspects of watch love. Watchmaking, watchbuying, getting Pop’s watch after he’s passed… everything is fair game. Co-editor Scott and I will read and edit them for content and clarity and we will collect them into a print-on-demand title that will be sold on this site. They will be sold at cost, but all comers will be considered for inclusion. Please email essays to john at wristwatchreview.com with the subject heading “ESSAY.” We will hold this call open until October.
I hope we can get some great essays and I think this will be a blast.
Velociphile does it again.
I was recently showing some industry execs one of our new technology demonstrators. One of them turned out to be someone I‚Äôd known for several years and being very happy to see them I gave our demo driver a rest and took to the track with them myself. Sat alternately pinned and restrained in the passenger seat harness answering his questions as the car whooshed through its paces I noticed his wrist on the gear shift sported a JLC. I pointed it out and in his broken English, while still tackling the course, he told me its story…

Ok. So they’re exporting $4.34 billion in watches. I would say 5% of those are the $10K-$40K range and 1% are the JLC Monsters in the $40K+ range. The real Sultan of Burundi watches. So what rarities are really moving out the door? $4K Rolexen and $1-9K everybody else including Omega, Panerai, etc.
Ladies and gentlemen… when we buy expensive watches, we are buying something as mass-produced as an iPod. I agree that even the iPods are elegant and beautiful, but I’m wondering how many of us are buying as an investment? Generally, I would rethink that strategy.
The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) announced that the value of Swiss watches exported for the first six months of this year topped $4.34 billion, rising 11 percent over the same period last year and exceeding forecasts.
Finished watches constituted the bulk of that growth, FH reports. The value of finished Swiss watch exports reached $3.95 billion for the six-month period, growing 12.3 percent compared to the same period in 2004.

An interesting thread over at WatchUSeek. Eric asks if he should wear his Planet Ocean to Jamaica. First, do any street toughs know what a Planet Ocean is and second, this brings up an interesting point: is watch thievery still a big deal especially considering the glut of fakes and quartz junk out there?

Fossil, one of the early adopters in the SPOT race, is now bowing out as Microsoft re-tools that standard. The result? It’s pretty iffy in terms of future SPOT direction. Fossil had a huge supply chain and lots of sales and that’s definitely going to hurt things.
Fossil has made their last MSN Direct watch, at least for the foreseeable future. Coco and Glam were made in a tiny batch and sold to Tiger Direct. However we hear Fossil is no longer going to make new watches and will re-direct their technology efforts after current inventory is sold through. Microsoft has recently pulled the SPOT initiative back into R&D and appears intent on pushing the technology into other products like the weather clocks and integration with the PC and other Microsoft products.
With SPOT going back into the garage for a re-tooling, the hope is that it will emerge with more stability and functionality. Indeed, the commitment from Microsoft over the past several months has been just that, though any improvements are difficult for end users to see. In a recent post in our forums, a Microsoft representative disclosed they have been working on infrastructure improvements to make the network more reliable and efficient in bandwidth usage.

Phil Torrone at make rocks a full story on the Fossil Abacus, which may or may not be the last Palm watch ever.
have a bit of a fetish for gadgety watches (video). Why waste the precious wrist real estate on something that can -just- tell time. Last week on MAKE I posted my HOW TO on getting RSS feeds to a Microsoft SPOT watch (Swatch, Fossil, Suunto and few others make these watches). I’m always on the look out for the uber geek watch- wireless SPOT watches for getting RSS feeds, TV watches from Japan, binary watches that tell time in, well, binary. So when Brian Jepson sent me a link to a sale on the Palm based PDA watch for $70 (about %50 less than it was a few months ago) and I had some Tiger credit voucher thing- I thought I’d see what I could do with a PDA on my wrist.

This UV sensing watch, the SeaWatch, tells you when it’s time to turn over and baste your hindquarters. It sounds an alarm when you’re in danger of frying.
Price is about $50.

Man, I thought my Russian Zlatoust Diver was a beast. This thing is actually a voice watch dealie. You dial 117, the number for Japanese time and weather, and it repeats the time for you. I also think the name, Zihotch, is highly suggestive and can be used in everyday conversation. “What are you up to, zihotch?”

UPDATE – Login works now. I guess it was busted.
Dear Readers,
As a service to the watch community, I’ve decided to create a watch and tool classifieds section. These ads are totally free and we are allowing, currently, anyone to post. Please feel free to consign your favorites here with us.
This is an experiment. I know there are about 50 other, and better, sales boards out there, but i thought it might be nice to offer something nice and small for some items. I will highlight items in the section from time to time.

Give SPOT a chance. CES edition Swatch Paparazzi watch with charger. Works perfectly. This watch is designed to pick up radio signals from SPACE (!!) – OK, the FM band – and inform you on News, Weather, Sports, et al. I will transfer ownership to you upon purchase but you will have to sign up for Microsoft’s Direct service to get news et al. Like new, no damage, never worn. 45mm face, rubber band.
Paypal perfect.
