Disappearing Watch Winder

December 30th, 2005 5 comments

Bergamo400420copy.jpg

I’ve been jet-setting quite a bit lately, so I don’t recall if it was on a flight from Chicago or from Baltimore, but I recently perused the pages of The Robb Report Collection, because of course I exemplify the luxury lifestyle. And I stumbled upon Wind Me Up: Orbita a lovely article by Christian Gullik. The article describes how Chuck Agnoff became interested in watch winders and eventually founded Orbita, a company that “sells a variety of watch winders in styles ranging from sleek modern to ornate baroque, accommodating between one and 40 watches.”

A visit to Orbita’s website introduces the company’s magnum opus: the Bergamo 40. This marvel of watch technology and art houses 40 automatic winders in an Italian-made cabinet where a remote controlled lift mechanism raises and lowers the watchwinder module for viewing and loading. In it’s lowered state, the piece of furniture leaves no clue as to the horological marvels hidden inside. The unit can be produced in Madrona Burl, Mahogany Parquet, or Brazilian Rosewood. Prices range from $45, 000 to $46,000.

Stylish, sophisticated, and secure… James Bond would be proud.

WWR founder, blogger extraordinaire, and gadget god John welcomed his firstborn son and heir into the world today. A healthy, strapping young lad, the young Biggs weighed in at an impressive 9.5 pounds, with a wrist big enough to sport a 44mm Panerai Luminor Marina with style and aplomb.

Congratulations to John and his lovely wife Asia. Everyone’s healthy and happy and as soon as the boy can type, John will have some free blogging labor.

Holy cats. What is this? Looks like it’s a real product, actually announced in 2003, but it looks like Dick Tracy had a baby.

Review: Swatch Automatc

December 27th, 2005 No comments

A hilarious review of a Swatch automatic compared to a JLC manual wind – which one do you think wins?

More importantly, there are a few refinements in the 21-jewel Swatch movement (an ETA 2842, a famous movement also used by Omega, Oris, and Raymond Weil, among other adult watches that you can find in your local mall) that the 19-jewel (two less!) JLC calibre 849 shamefully lacks. And what is this “calibre” business? It sounds like a canadian hip-hop reference. “Yo, yo, I’m Calibre 849 and Imma gonna bustacap in yoazz, and then go wolf down some poutine wi’ yo ol’ lady, cuz I gots all the Canadian Tire Money in the worl’, yo!”

Price Fixing vs. ‘Spensivity

December 20th, 2005 1 comment

Everyone wonders why watches on-line cost much less than watches in the store, and there are a number of very complex explanations. However, when you buy at a bricks and mortar store, you create a relationship. When you buy online you send tendrils into the ether. Which is better? Even I don’t have an answer. But here’s a great thread about Price on WUS.

If your’re an AD, you don’t want to get your’re franchise pulled because
you over discounted. It’s far better to walk them instead. For most dealers,
Rolex and Cartier are their “bread and butter” lines and if there’re pulled, there’re doors may close soon afterwards. The margins on Patek, Panerai,
Rolex and Cartier are so thin, overdiscounting is like cutting your own throat. It’s stupid to discount Panerai, there’re at least five waiting in line
willing to pay full-pop, but if your’re a big customer, deals are made.

Irish Watches? Aye.

December 19th, 2005 2 comments

Some beatiful work by the McGonigle Brothers of Ireland. Striking looks and workmanship.

So here you have it, a true Irish watch. The case is a prototype and not indicative of the expected final design, so please excuse any minor imperfections. The hands are of polished steel with 18K gold pointers. The dial is translucent sapphire with exposition at the bottom for the tourbillon cage, and at the top for the wolf toothed barrel.

Great Shots of a NH6050 Citizen Aviator

December 19th, 2005 1 comment

James took some nice shots of his NH6050.

When you have a pair of aging eyes like mine, you will appreciates 40mm dials with very clear legible markings. At the flip of your wrist, you can read off the time within 1 sec. Seiko Black Monster is one of my quick examples but this recent addition – Citizen Automatic NH6050 certainly makes my eyes glow. Here are some photos to share ……
