A Sassy Panerai Split

July 14th, 2006 No comments

Hokey shmokes! I love the Rattrapante concept – a dual chronograph function that alllows for split measurements – and it looks like Panerai did a pretty good job on theirs. Just enough beef and just enough cool. Luckily, Niffko on the Big Watch Forum go one and deigned to show it off.

Scorpion Watch Company

Is your watch not badass enough? Why not try a Scorpion, a new brand created by two buddies on from Denver and Scottsdale. This automatic diver is Swiss-made and looks like it can eat your IWC and Patek Phillipe and then take your Panerai into the back room and have its way with it.

They expect the first model, this red beast here, to be available in November. Very nice.

Wither Tourbillons?

July 12th, 2006 1 comment

cortex3.jpgA great story on the history and value of modern tourbillons. That still doesn’t make me want to get one, though. They’re cute, but not worth the price.

FROM 1801 to 1945, about 600 to 800 tourbillons were made in total, an average of four to six per year. In contrast, the respected Jaeger-LeCoultre Platinum 2 Reverso was already a 500-piece limited edition produced over several years. And Girard-Perregaux reportedly makes about 150 of its iconic Three Golden Bridges classic annually.

D&G Time Ibiza People

dg-dolce-gabana-time-ibiza-people.jpgAhh, such unmigitaged douchery! This $250 has little time zones for partying and relaxing and the website consists of annoying trance music with a bunch of ticking behind it. Please, people, please!

Dan found this pitted Seiko at the bottom of the ocean while diving. He hasn’t fired it up yet, but looks like the mineral crystal got quite a beating from Nemo.

Swatch and Rolex: Catfight!

Listen, I like a good Omega as much as the next man, but old Hayek need to rethink this shiz if he thinks he can take on Rolex. Rolex = Golfing Executive’s Watch of Choice.

The flames of hostility began to spark during an interview that Nick Hayek Jr. gave to the excellent newspaper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. “The growth of Rolex seems to be slowing down a little,” he declared, adding quickly, “Omega, on the other hand, is doing quite well.” And, laying his cards on the table, he went on to say, “Our ambition is clear. We want to equal, and then to surpass Rolex in three to four years.”

Omega Constellation Blog

July 11th, 2006 No comments

piepan gold top 551.jpgIt takes all types, apparently, so now there’s a blog dedicated to the Omega Constellation. I have a Constellation that my Dad gave me – beautiful little piece, very elegant, but the modern line really hasn’t caught my attention. Maybe now that there’s a blog, I’ll pay a bit more attention.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Ellipse Isometer Escapement

July 10th, 2006 1 comment

eie.jpg

Sweet merciful watch gods! What is that! That’s a single hand escapement, called the Isometer by JLC. Seriously. This is a very big deal. The standard escapement loses accuracy because the little jeweled hands move back and forth, leading to friction et al. This apparently has one little hand that swings the balance wheel. More as we get it.

The Reverso Grande Complication a Triptyque is the results of tireless effort by many constructeurs and watchmakers under the strong guidance of the Jaeger-LeCoultre management and is truly the result of JLC’s collective effort and aspiration. We made a tour of the Manufacture last month to see the work involved in making of this Grande Complication and we spoke to the management, the product department, the prototype department, the Constructeurs etc to learn as much as possible about this new breakthrough.

A Portrait of Obsession

July 10th, 2006 No comments

abbey2.jpgA quick post on WatchRap opens up a whole can of worms on the nature of watch collecting. It is an obsession, friends, and an expensive one at that. Not as expensive as buying a Corvette every year, but this stuff adds up.

You’re asking advice from a bunch of watch addicts that are willing to buy expensive photo equipment to take macro pictures of movements. We will go on vacation and take pictures of our watches in foreign places. We will drive a car really fast and take a picture of our watch beside the speedometer. We take pictures of screws and post them. We also get replies to the post. We have no common sense. We are really lemmings leading you to the edge of the horology cliff.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. For those of us who love us some Orange Monster, the Blue Monster is a tough purchase to stomach. Why improve on perfection? Why spend a few hundred on a new diver when old faithful will do? Well, friends, the Blue Monster aka the SKZ213K1, is a limited edition beast with a mission – to make you part with a few hundred bucks to own a limited edition diver with charm, pedigree, and definite bulk.

Review: Vendoux Sorento

July 6th, 2006 No comments

vendouxhp.jpgIt’s not an IWC, but it’s close enough. The Vendoux is an inexpensive automatic aviator with a certain flair all it’s own. No real pedigree – the folks at Vendoux.nl sell this thing for $200 – but it’s sufficiently big and attractive so more power too ‘em.

Yes, the watch is big! It’s funny, you see a watch pictured on the internet and its stated dimensions are 46mm (for example), yet you cannot picture the watch being that big in person. This watch was like this for me. The info said it was 46mm, but it just did not look that big. But, it is! When I first took it out of the box I had expected the watch to weigh more than it does, it’s actually quite light for its size (approx. 90 grams). But. I liked it right away, especially after it was on my wrist! It had the look (and size) I wanted without being an outright knock-off.

Emirates Team Zealand Wins One for the Gipper

July 6th, 2006 1 comment

28133081.jpg

Omega has been sponsoring the Emirates Team Zealand and they recently won the “Act 12 in Valencia, Spain and ended first in the general ranking of this season’s ACC Championship.” How this effects our small, meaningless lives in our sad-eyed cubicles is beyond me, but they do get a really nice regatta watch.

Cindy-Tall.jpgNot quite watchy, but Cindy Crawford is now flogging Omega’s Aqua jewelry line – The Jewelry for Women Whose Men Like Omegas.

As an ambassador for the Swiss brand for 10 years, Ms. Crawford has consistently communicated the values of the brand all over the world. “The OMEGA Jewelry collection comprises distinctive pieces, with each one a true masterpiece of craftsmanship and style. I am thrilled to continue my relationship and work with Omega as an ambassador,” said Cindy.

Oh REEEEALY?

Here we see her wearing the Aqua collection, “comprised of earrings ($50,000), bracelet ($80,000) and necklace ($150,000).”
