WatchMyWrist

058e70ebbc4d53ed0d52261842c5c530.jpgSo this is fairly interesting. It seems an enterprising watch lover has created a watch rental service that allows you to wear famous brand names on on for pennies to the dollar. I’ll have to give it a go, but the concept seems sound. Who wouldn’t want to wander around wearing a Zenith or IWC for about $200.

Are Watchmakers Doomed?

March 19th, 2007 1 comment

watchmaker.jpgA nice thread about the creation of movements and the death of watchmaking.

Among many other speculative reasons, my friend and recognized world wide authority in the world of fine timepieces, proposed an idea I had heard before, whispered between old timers for years, in this niche, curtained world of magic and mythology that is Haute Horlogerie – “modern movements are designed on, by, and for computers and automated production, and thus, leave no room for the world of true skilled manual watchmaking. The world where an experienced, gifted watchmaker adjusts, files, polishes, tunes, something that was conceived with more ‘human, real world’ tolerances.”

The Watch Zen Koan

Some prose poetry about watches… read it if you dare.

Sure, if you want a traditional basic watch, you can easily find many, at any price range you want. So my point isn’t that these are going away—of course they aren’t. But the stuff that makes the news, the stuff that gets the attention and the ad space and the buzz—in short, the stuff that seems to be swaggering through the world of horology with shoulders as broad as a linebacker and a voice as loud as a rock band in full cry, shouldering everything else into the corners—seems to be stuff designed with little purpose in mind other than to holler, as loudly as possible, “look at MEEEEEE!!!”.

Sorry for not posting. We had a problem with our DNS server last week and while the rest of the world could see the site, I couldn’t. Strange.

Sinn Chrono… Mmmmm…

March 13th, 2007 1 comment

sinn757.jpg

Man, I’m really liking this new Sinn chrono.

The 757 is 43mm and considered a Pilot´s watch. The bezel can be turned clockwise and anti-clockwise which is not typical for divers watches due to safety regulations. Case and bezel are tegimented. The bracelet for the 757 will be tegimented, too. The watch is water resistant up to 20 bar (200 meters) and the price of this watch is approx 1270 Euro. (Thanks to U Turn).

Wooden Watch from 1900

March 9th, 2007 10 comments

wooden_2.jpgTo heck with ceramics! Give me frasier fir! This Russian watch is made almost entirely out of wood and has a beautifully carved geartrain, case, and face. Amazing, painstaking work.

One man, one watch, and the age-old question: do I really need another watch?

Back to the question. Is it ok if you dont like a watch which you blindly got, without seeing it in person. How to avoid it in the future???? What do you guys look for when u buy a watch you never seen in your life?

Among the Watchmakers

chkl_06_l.jpg

A great photo reportage on a German watchmaker in his little studio plus some amazing watch shots.

When visiting german watchmaker Christian Klings recently I felt reminded of this old term, not only because his tiny workshop, also on the top floor under the roof exactly meets this descriptions; also his style of watchmaking comes very, very close. Few has been written about Christian Klings and different from the few “stars” among the AHCI his name isnt that well known even among those, more focused on the world of independents.

The Bell & Ross BR 01 Grand Complication

March 5th, 2007 4 comments

bellrosstourbillon.jpg

I had been meaning to write about this new B&R monster but never got around to it. Not much is known about this super duper Bell and Ross aviator boat anchor/jet pilot blinder, but it apparently has a thrust indicator. Why? Who knows.

If its a Grand Complication it traditionally should have about 6 different features. We shall see.

Audemars Piguet Team Alinghi

audemarspiguet_teamalinghi2-thumb.jpgAP has a hot new piece made of “forged carbon.” Not sure if that’s carbon fibre or some sort of ceramic, but ProWatches got all excited.

They are the first company to use “forged carbon” for the watch case. Forged carbon is not only strong and light it also has a unique look that makes this watch stand out. I cannot wait until I see more watch companies using forged carbon on their watches.

Trust me. It costs too much for us.

Formex Camo Pilot

March 1st, 2007 1 comment

formexmontre-thumb.jpgThis is the first I’ve heard of Formex, but it looks fairly cool. It’s got a strange coloration with a crazy camo band, so it might be good for nights in the brush. And I do love me a bullhead.

The classic pilot watch from the AS1500 series is now for sale in a black version and as a “limited edition,” in a camouflage battledress style. These watches come with a beige or green face and, in addition to the usual titanium and silicone bracelet, with a fabric strap in the matching colour.
