Would A Woodchuck Chuck It?

September 30th, 2011 No comments

Well, I certainly can’t answer to the watch-wearing habits of woodland mammals.  So, let’s stick with whether or not we’d strap this watch from the WeWood company on or not.  What we have here is the DATE model, and I want to address the name of the model right away.

And A Pilot Gives His Thoughts On His Archer Watch

September 30th, 2011 No comments

Our post from two days ago on the Archer Aero II garnered a lot of comments, but there’s one in particular I’d like to draw your attention to.  Most of the pilot watches we see are simply inspired by designs used by pilots.  However, reader Flingwing DID actually use the Aero II in combat situations, so I thought it would be worthwhile to highlight his comments:

I’m one of the Pilots who has flown with this watch in Afghanistan. Loved it. The display is the right size for great visibility in the Cockpit without being obtrusive on the wrist. Hit the face with a flashlight beam for 10-15 seconds and it illuminates brilliantly throughout night missions without being distracting. The minute hand on the outside is what I have come to love from an operational standpoint as well as asthetically (sp?). About 90% of the flying was based on the Minute and this watch allowed an easy crosscheck to what had been planned and what the current actual was. For those missions that required landing times to the second I would use the Helicopters onboard GPS.

It held up very well. Did not lose any appreciatable time. Only point would be to make sure you tighten the wrist screws on the band with maybe a little loctite. Lost two of them but Al was kind enough to replace with a couple spares he had. Last, it is a great looking watch and have more comments about it than any other I’ve owned and one must love when someone picks up on the watch amongst the sea of Breitlings and Tissots at an Air Show.

As a Pilot in the RCAF it is nice to fly with a Canadian built watch.

So, you’re not just getting a good looking watch – you’re getting one that’s been flight-tested and mission approved!

Ugly though they may be, these Swatch watches have a trick up their sleeves. Using the same technology found in the Tissot T-Touch line, these Swatch Touch watches are touch-sensitive and allow you to swipe through different functions and control most of the watch features with a simple finger tap.

How About A Seriously Relaxful Diver?

September 29th, 2011 No comments

Today’s watch is something I stumbled on completely by accident – and boy oh boy, what a happy accident it was!  The watch is the GMT Diver offered up by The BaliHa’i Project.  Now, before you go and write this of as “just another diver”, let’s take a closer look at the company, and what they’re producing.

Targeting Our Neighbors To The North

September 28th, 2011 11 comments

It seems that there are no shortage of companies today turning out flieger-inspired watches – but I believe this is the first time that I’ve come across a Canadian company making them.  Today’s example is brought to us by Archer Watches.

Whoa, Whoa, Slow Down Gallet: Screw Lock WHAT Now?

September 27th, 2011 No comments

If you know me you know that I love this new Gallet Chronograph but I also love this helpful infographic complete with about 500 arrows, seventy labels, and a paragraph of text. This thing has a rattrapante chrono (split seconds), a timezone bezel, and big date and looks like a cross between a Jaeger-LeCoultre and a watch one of the Thunderbirds would wear.

Pianissimo Is A Forte

September 27th, 2011 No comments

At least, it seems to be for Fortis (for those not musically inclined, pianissimo = very soft, forte = loud) with their B-42 Black Black model.  And no, that’s not a typo – they’re calling it Black Black.  I have a feeling that has to do with the black dial, black case, and the black luminova.

Video: A Look At The Fastest Chronograph Watch Ever Made

September 27th, 2011 No comments

The TAG Heuer Mikrotimer from HODINKEE on Vimeo.

This video shows TAG Heuer’s Mikrotimer Flying 1000 Concept watch in action. This mechanical watch times things to 1/1000th of a second – 300 times faster than a human blink. As the watch spins maniacally, it’s actually meting out 1/1000ths of a second at 500 Hz. That means the small balance wheel inside pops back and forth 3.6 million times an hour – a speed that would shatter many mechanical systems.

I’m Harboring A Hankering

September 26th, 2011 1 comment

After reading this post, I have a feeling you will too – for one of the watches produced by Richard and Maria Kristina Habring of, fittingly enough, Habring.  Mr. Habring definitely has the chops, starting out at IWC, and working his way along a path that brought him to producing his own pieces.

Jazz Up Your Formal Wear

September 25th, 2011 No comments

In yesterday’s post, I presented a watch that I thought was well suited for formal occasions.  Today, I thought I’d continue along that same path, but bring to light a piece from a (likely) more well-known brand; namely, Hamilton’s Jazzmaster Slim.

If It’s Not Hip To Be Square, How About Rectangular?

September 24th, 2011 No comments

Today, I’d like to bring you attention to a case shape that we don’t see a lot today – the humble rectangle.  While it does make for a smaller watch that some might prefer, it does make for a style that will serve you well in formal settings.  Today’s example was created by Glycine, a Swiss manufacturer that has been in business since 1814.
