So, in our last series of posts, I covered a fully custom watch.  Though I felt it was very affordable, I realize that the options presented might not exactly fit into everyone’s budget.  The folks over at BOAT (Be Optimistic And Thankful) have another option for you.

The watch that they have on offer is called the Sealed model.  Why sealed?  That’s because the dial is actually made in much the same way that documents were sealed waaaaaayyyy back in the day – take a heated up blob of wax, press a seal into it (generally a ring; here, it’s a die) and leave the imprint of a sigil.  You can read more about their specific process here.

In the case of this watch, though, what you get is a watch dial, in your choice of one of seven colors.  Other customization options include the hands (black or white), case finish (black or grey), and the strap (black or brown).

The watch itself is a fairly simple unit.  The 39mm stainless steel case is rated to 30 meters of water resistance, and houses the quartz movement that drives the hands around the dial.  The crystal is mineral, and the strap is made of leather.

At $85, this is very affordable watch, and one that offers a interesting twist with the wax dial.  I suppose you run the risk of it melting if you leave it in the car on a hot day, though…  I was also surprised at how thick the watch was for being a quartz.  Perhaps a future revision could slim things down.  If you’d like to customize one for yourself, just head on over to the BOAT site.
