Techne Has A New Automatic Available

Posted on 20 May 2012 by Patrick Kansa

If you recall, the last time we looked at a Techne model, it was a mecha-quartz.  I personally found it intriguing, but I know others would prefer a full-on mechanical watch.  If that’s you, your wait is over!

First off, the important new bit – the new Goshawk (a re-edition of their 2010 model) features a Miyota 8217 automatic movement.  This is a bit more interesting from other Miyota movements that you may be more accustomed to, as it actually adds a 24 hour complication to the mix (this shows up on the dial at the 9 o’clock mark.

Here, I like the choice of the Miyota.  It helps the costs stay down, and it’s a known quantity.  Additionally, I’m finding the 24 hour register pretty handy, especially when it comes time to set the date and time after the watch has been sitting for awhile.  Here’s the other pertinent specs for the piece:

  • 41mm stainless steel case (12.5mm thick); stainless or PVD finish
  • Sapphire crystal
  • 38 hour power reserve
  • 50m water resistance

All in all, this is just a great looking watch.  I do wish the date wheel was color matched to the dial, but past that, I don’t see much I’d want to change with the watch.  It’s also a very affordable watch  - prices ranges from $309.99 to $334.99 ( if you get a leather strap and the PVD case).  If this holds up to the standard I experienced with the Sparrowhawk II, then I’d have no qualms about recommending you take a closer look to add one to your collection.

EDIT:  Pricing updated (5/21/2012)
