Welcome back to our weekly installment, Watching the Web, where we have a quick look at some interesting watches and articles that have popped up over the last week, as well as taking a second look at what some of our more popular articles this week were. Today, we’ve got an unexpected article on watches from The Economist, and an review from last month from The Time Bum.  After those, we’ll highlight (as usual) some of our more popular posts from the last week. Read on to see what we’ve got in store for you.

Coming out of left field, we’ve got an article on watches from the folks over at The Economist.  In it, they point out the technology dichotomy that we seem to have within the watch world – while smart watches are the hot “gadgety” segment, there have been some massive improvements in materials and other breakthroughs that we’re seeing take place for good ol’ mechanical watches.   It’s a good read, and worthwhile as a quick primer on some new things coming down the pipe.  source

Next, we’ve got a review of a brand I’d not heard of before – Szanto.  While new watch brands seem to be cropping up daily, Szanto has a card up it’s sleeve – it was started up by one of the co-founders of Luminox.  Also compelling?  The price – the model shown above (and another referenced in the article) come in at the affordable price of only $225.  Intrigued?  I thought so – check out the full review right here.

Detroit Watch Co Pride of Detroit 01

Now, time to head back to our own pages.  By far the most popular article of the previous week was our introduction of a new watch brand from Detroit, Detroit Watch Co.  They’ve been garnering a lot of attention, and quick look at their designs can tell you why (the Detroit resurgence angle certainly doesn’t hurt either).  We’ll be getting some hands-on time with the watches when they’re available; in the meantime, see what Matt had to say about the designs here.

Padron Watch Hennepin 01

Another popular article for the week covered the third Kickstarter outing for the Padron Watch folks.  When we wrote the article, we weren’t sure if the project would be funded, but figured it had a pretty good chance.  Well, we must be prescient, because they’re over 200% of their funding goal – so these are watches that will be getting made.  The project still has about a month to go, so head on over here and see if this is one you might want to pick up.

Last, but certainly not least, don’t forget to enter in our latest giveaway.  Head on over here and get your entries in.  Oh, and keep your eyes open next week – we’ve got a great American-made watch coming up for our July giveaway!

With that, we’ll wrap things up. As always, if there’s something you think we should be covering, feel free to drop us a line. If you bring something up that we end up writing about, we’ll be sure to tip our hats (electronically, if not literally) in your general direction.
