Watching the Web for August 2, 2014

Welcome back to our weekly installment, Watching the Web, where we have a quick look at some interesting watches and articles that have popped up over the last week, as well as taking a second look at what some of our more popular articles this week were.  Today, we’ve got a discussion of who the big watch holding companies are, and another look at James Bond’s watches, with a focus on Omega Seamasters.  After those, we’ll highlight (as usual) some of our more popular posts from the last week. Read on to see what we’ve got in store for you.

First up, let’s talk about who owns who. Interestingly enough, this is a topic that came up in conversation over dinner earlier this week, and then we also had the news that Ulysse Nardin was bought by the Kering Group. While you might have some familiarity with the big houses, and one or two brands that they’ve got, it can be hard to keep straight what umbrella a particular brand falls under. Fortunately for you, Ariel Adams, has all that information, and put together an article over at Forbes. In it, he outlines exactly who owns what, and what the remaining independent luxury brands are.

You might be thinking it wasn’t that long ago we talked about James Bond watches, and you’re right – we had an infographic in an earlier roundup. This time around, we’ve got a more in-depth article, one that focuses in on the Omega Seamaster. The article over at Monochrome (and built up by Watchtime) starts off with the history of the watches, touching base with the early Rolex, and then the pieces put together by Q. Then they pick things up in the 1995 movie Goldeneye, where the Omega Seamaster made it’s first appearance on 007’s wrist, and has stayed ever since. Now, let’s turn our attention back to our own pages.  First up, Matt’s writeup on the new Lew & Huey Orthos proves something to me – you all really love the Lew & Huey products.  Which makes sense – they’ve got some solid styling at attractive pricepoints.  The Orthos looks to be a very nice entry into the dive watch segment – definitely check out Matt’s opinion.  They’ve also just introduced a new loyalty program, which you  can see the details of by signing up at their site.

Next up we’ve got a piece that I’m particularly happy with, our six-strap roundup.  This article covers a fairly wide variety to be found in the watch strap market – slimmer pieces in interesting materials, NATOs in cool color schemes, and several different custom leather straps (including one made from a repurposed baseball glove).  If you’re thinking about a new strap, you owe it to yourself to check out this article to get some ideas.
