Why spend money on a pricey quartz movement when you can get a monstrous Ball with a built-in mechanical thermometer.
This is a dive watch, but the coolest feature is the mechanical thermometer that reads Fahrenheit and celsius. They used tritium tubes in the watch dial and the rotating inner bezel for excellent illumination. There are 2006 Limited Editions available worldwide for $3,299.

Very cool. G-P gave the ANF a free, one-of-a-kind watch to raffle off for victims of Hurricane Felix.
“Virtus White” is an utterly exclusive piece handcrafted by Girard-Perregaux for ANF. The only one ever manufactured of its kind, this extraordinary watch was created to strengthen ANF’s efforts of providing hope and relief to children and families such as those affected by Hurricane Felix. Through the Foundation’s “Bright Future Reconstruction Fund” and relief operations, ANF seeks to rebuild lives and create new sources of opportunity. All suggested contributions of $100 made to the Foundation will merit participation in this historic drawing for Girard-Perregaux’s “Virtus White.”

I’ll be featuring another of our advertisers, MidwestWatches.com, in a little while but I wanted to point out, to all the coin collectors out there, that a new eBay shop just signed up with us. They sell ancient coins for fun and/or profit, so maybe you can surprise grampy with a Roman-era coin, perhaps the very kind used to buy his freedom from the salt mines in ancient Caledonia.

“JACOB THE JEWELER” Pleads Guilty
“Jacob the Jeweler” of Jacob & Co. a celebrity jeweler who put diamonds on celebrities from Elton John to Kanye West pleaded guilty Wednesday to falsifying records and giving false statements to investigators looking into a multistate drug ring.
Terms of the plea deal call for Jacob Arabov of New York to serve up to 46 months in prison and pay a $2 million penalty, U.S. Attorney Stephen J. Murphy said in a news release. No sentencing date was immediately set by U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn.
In return for the guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to drop money laundering charges against the man known in the hip-hop world as ‘Jacob the Jeweler,’ said Arabov’s attorney, Benjamin Brafman.

Reader James sent me a link to Steel Cake watches, a new watch company in Brooklyn that makes beefy, larger quartz pieces for cheap. Their line-up includes a large, square chrono and an oversized military piece that don’t look like Chinese OEM knock offs, which makes me very happy. Besides, how can you go wrong for $125 a pop?
Welcome to Steel Cake

Scorpion, makers of the Reef Diver, is now called Serket. Why? Who knows, but I think the name is much cooler.
In Egyptian mythology a Serket was originally the deification of the scorpion. With our new name and new website, we are unveiling our next model, The Serket Reef Diver 2.0.

WWR fave Blancier just launched an amazing new world timer. This is a fully manufacture movement and, as such, costs over $20,000. Gah!!!! Trying to figure out how it works.
Worldtimers? There are a great many worldtimers. Almost every respected watch brand has such a model in its collection. In reality, these watches could only show the various time zones of the world in approximate terms… until now.
The master craftsmen of Lottermann & Söhne from the Germany city of Mannheim present the Blancier Worldtimer 1. Their self-designed mechanical timepiece shows all 39 of the world’s time zones at a glance. Behind the beautiful harmony of the colourful yet subtle watch face is the mechanical movement which took two years to develop.
So this is fairly interesting. It seems an enterprising watch lover has created a watch rental service that allows you to wear famous brand names on on for pennies to the dollar. I’ll have to give it a go, but the concept seems sound. Who wouldn’t want to wander around wearing a Zenith or IWC for about $200.

I’m not in love with this thing, but if you like Entourage and watches, then go ahead and pick this up. I can’t imagine it’s much more than $500 and if it is then someone is paying too much for a watch.
In fact, the only telltale details that link it to the show are the star design on the face and an engraved quote on the back of the case: “A lifestyle is a terrible thing to waste.” The handsome watch features a steel case and screw-in black face plate, Japanese movement, and water-resistance to 50 meters. A nice perk: the watch was made in a limited edition of 300 pieces.

Oh no! Raymond Weil, watchmaker to the Sears, is suing Charlize Theron for wearing another watch or something. I’m saying BFD.
In court papers filed late Monday in state Supreme Court, Weil said Theron signed an endorsement deal saying that from October 2005 through December 2006 she would only wear Weils high-end watches.
That deal allowed Weil to use Therons photographs in its advertisements in exchange for “substantial funds,” court papers said.
Meanwhile, Theron had an endorsement deal to promote a Dior perfume, Weils lawsuit said. The 31-year-old actress “was actually photographed wearing a watch from the Christian Dior line” at a March 14, 2006, news conference at a film festival in Austin, Texas, court papers said. A photo of her wearing the watch is included as an exhibit.

Next week we have some real treats for you. I’ve got my hands on the latest Bathy’s watch, the automatic 100 Fathoms. It’s a beaut. Then we’ve got some special surprises from a new brand in town, Riedenschild. We now run the official Riedenschild Forum as well, so start keeping your eye on them. They’re very interesting.

Omega has traditionally used standard ETA or Valjoux movements in almost all of their pieces. The movements are considerably improved over the regular models, but they still come from the same pot. Now, however, they’re making their own COSC-certified movement with 202 components. It’s called the 8500/8501 and will wind up in their higher-end pieces for now.
Always at the forefront of technical innovations and renowned as the watchmaking company which produced the first-ever industrialised movement, OMEGA presented its exclusive in-house manufacture calibre 8500/8501 to a select audience during a press conference which took place today at the Cité du Temps in Geneva.
Replete with technologically- advanced features, the new automatic movement is a COSC*-certified chronometer comprising 202 completely redesigned components. It is naturally equipped with an upgraded version of OMEGA’s proprietary Co-Axial technology guaranteeing prolonged timekeeping accuracy and reliability over time. This virtuoso 13-lines movement has two barrels which increase the energy source to provide greater stability, thus ensuring an impressive 60-hour power reserve.

Great thread over at WuS about sub-$500 chronos. I second the notion that the Swiss Army chronos are killer and very inexpensive. Hamilton should be down in the $500 range as well.
There are some Swiss Army 9G 600 Chronograph going on ebay now for $450, they have the valjoux 7750 movement. You don’t often see that caliber movement at that low price. There is a massive thread in the affordable forum here talking about them.

Looks like Glycine is updating their Combat line with new movements and looks. I like the Combat line – Glycine knows how to make neon faces and they look incredible. The Airman is their most popular watch so these are considerably less expensive and tres cool.
The COMBAT 07 Automatic looks every inch a classic and embodies everything that a functional quality watch should be “and nothing more, quite consciously,” says Katherina Brechbühler. The lines of the new automatic COMBAT are clean in every respect, from the casing to the dial and the hands. The ergonomics have improved over those of its predecessor, which is why the watch fits the wrist even better. The COMBAT 07 Automatic is fitted with the ETA 2824 movement, which can be seen through the glass back, has a scratch-resistant sapphire glass and is waterproof up to 50 metres. It is available with three different dials: black/orange, white/grey and blue/orange, and with a leather strap or metal bracelet. Despite its top quality, this mechanical watch is extremely

WristDreams is reporting that the rumored Tag Heuer phones are real.
Dial-a-Phone has alleged that the new phone device will be “a completely new design,” which can’t be said for some brands like the D&G RAZR, which lacked originality save for the gold finish and ridiculously high price.
