Brooklyn Watches: You Know, From Brooklyn

March 23rd, 2011 No comments

These watches are based on vintage classics and remade by a young man in New York’s favorite borough, Brooklyn. The designer, David Sokosh, slaps a huge Unitas movement into new cases and then pops on new hands and a face. He sells some of them at Brooklyn Flea and a few online, but obviously these are limited editions.

Be still my heart! Victorinox releasing a Valjoux chrono!

August 9th, 2010 1 comment

I’ve always wanted a mechanical Swiss Army watch. It’s been a private dream of mine, stuck somewhere between the jet-pack and dating Milla Jovovich. I know that Victorinox once made mechanicals but now they’re making them again, and I couldn’t be happier. There are two models one with an “olive and cream dial with luminescent hands and numerals on a genuine brown leather strap for $1695 and a black dial with PVD case and bracelet for $1895, not too bad for a Valjoux 7750. The model first appeared with a quartz movement but now is going automatic. Huzzah!

Supreme Court to hear the case of Omega vs. Costco

April 20th, 2010 2 comments

If you head into some CostCo stores you’ll be surprised to find Omega watches at a considerably discount. Those are grey market pieces and CostCo essentially sells them “illegaly,” the illegality stemming from Omega’s authorized reseller policy and little else. It works like this:

Companies that make high-end products often try to control distribution so that the goods do not end up selling for less. However, many offer cheaper prices to distributors in other countries. Costco and other retailers buy the products from those distributors, ship them to the U.S. and sell them at a discount.

Have a little cash lying around? Pick yourself up a Blancpain one-of-a-kind watch at the Monaco Yacht Show. The watch will be sold at the Only Watch charity auction.

It’s basically a 500 Fathoms with a translucent face to show the date wheel. Pretty, but not amazing. No big whoop.

Deals at Steel Cake

January 27th, 2009 2 comments

1193101060383270869485Matt at Steel Cake Watches is offering his customers a considerable discount on all Steel Cake models, reducing everything to $75. Use the discount code “steel75″ on checkout.

My favorite is this Black Square Chrono which is sadly sold out but the rest of the models are very hard-edged and masculine. I’m not a big quartz man myself but pop over and check them out.

How to polish a watch

December 2nd, 2008 1 comment

OK. I just suffered a fairly hair-raising situation with my new baby. Due to my own carelessness, I dinged the Jaeger a few times and wanted to polish them out. I got a few types of polish including one designed for delicate metals and tried to do it by hand. BAD IDEA. This created a fog of fine scratches that only I could really see but that drove me crazy nonetheless. So I tried Flitz by hand. More scratches. I was at wits end.

Are big watches over?

June 27th, 2008 5 comments

Chad the Watch Guy is reporting that he’s seeing a max out in big watches at 42mm which means even rappers and oligarchs won’t go around wearing pie plates on their wrists for much longer. I can handle a 50mm+ sports watch, but 42mm is a bit big for a mechanical, non? Your thoughts?
