Yes, you read that right – we’re having another look at the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf. Each one has had some slight differences to it, but this one is very much like one we looked at before albeit with a different color scheme, and the lovely bracelet (with a change) from a different one. However, when I saw the color palette on this Zodiac Super Sea Wolf, I could not pass up the chance to get the loaner in.

As we all know by know, blue is by far my favorite color. If I had to pick a second favorite, orange would be up there, so this particular combination of a dark blue and bright orange called out to me. With the overall darker scheme, the watch is able to adapt to a dressier situation, while the colors (and the fact that it’s a dive watch) also make it amenable to more casual scenarios as well. In terms of overall styling, the piece just works it’s retro-modern charm. And would you look at that, they’e even got a color-matched date wheel in there.

I also was interested to get this Zodiac Super Sea Wolf loaner in as it came paired on the jubilee bracelet, which is simply comfortable, and the mix of polished and brushed surfaces is something I rather like. The previous one I reviewed had a hidden expansion spring on one side of the clasp, which allows you some flexibility during the day (if you’re like me, your wrist can expand and contract a little throughout the day). This Zodiac Super Sea Wolf had that same expansion but with a change – smaller springs (in terms of the give it had) but one on each side of the clasp, which makes it a little more balanced. Regardless, something that was appreciated, and definitely enhanced comfort. It wouldn’t help you in a wetsuit situation (it doesn’t expand quite enough) but this is really more of a dressy desk diver that can go for a dip than a serious dive tool.

In fact, when I was wearing this, one of my friends – who’s style tends towards the more classic and timeless – commented that this was one of the nicest watches I’ve had in, in his opinion. He’s not a “watch guy” per se, but he appreciates things that are well-designed and well-made. So, for it to catch his eye on my wrist (and not in a scenario where I was showing it around) speaks volumes to me about the piece. Sure, the darker colors are more conservative, but that allows the watch carry it’s design with confidence. And hey, the glints of light off of the polished surfaces on the case and bracelet certainly help catch the eye in a way that bright colors don’t always do.

So, yes, this Zodiac Super Sea Wolf was very much like others I’ve reviewed. With the subtle changes in color palette and bracelet, however this $1,395 version is easily my favorite design of the bunch that I’ve looked at. If you’re not a fan of this vintage-look line, you probably haven’t even made it this far in the review. For everyone else, if you’re a fan of the look but were hoping for something a bit more subdued than the last one we looked at, well, this could be the one calling out to you. zodiacwatches.com
