It”s been some time since we”ve featured an Ickler-designed case on these pages, and I think their latest model (in the Archimede family) is worth a look.
The watch in question is the new Pilot 42 / 42H (), which captures the classic Pilot (or Aviator) style in a very sharp-looking bronze case. For me, this watch is all about the case. I”ve really liked the Ickler designs (both what I”ve seen in person, and have just read about), as they”re well sorted. Add in a bronze case that is going to patina, I”m interested. Tell me that the case is under 10mm thick (for an automatic movement, mind you), and I”m taking notice.
Inside that 42mm case you have an ETA-2824 doing the work of time- and date-keeping (unless you opt for the H variant, which excludes the date and logo). The crown is made of the same CuSn8 material; the stainless caseback features a mineral crystal (or you could opt for a solid caseback).
Up front, you have a black dial with black hands (on the 42) or blue hands (on the 42H). Regardless of the model, you”ll have four different leather straps to choose from, as well as a variety of upgrades to things like the crystal and the rotor.
Coming in at just under $600 (outside the EU) for the base model, it”s definitely an interesting proposition, for someone who”s looking for a pilot watch that breaks away a little bit from the norm.
