As we’ve mentioned in prior articles, we’re hitting the 40th anniversary of the G-Shock brand. We’ve been able to share some of what is coming, and there are other things that we’ve seen under embargo that, well, they’re pretty awesome things. One that just delights my amateur chef side is the G-Shock MR-G GASSAN.
Rather than try and re-wordsmith all that has gone into creating this amazing metalwork, we’re just going to go with the verbiage we received from the brand:
Featuring a bezel with recrystallized hybrid titanium (Ti-64 & pure titanium) that expresses the Gassan family’s signature ayasugi-hada (wave-like) pattern cascading the bezel and a blue-grey AIP® treatment to the entire timepiece that recreates a distinctive ferrous blue color tone, the MRGB2000GA-1 has a unique, one-of-a-kind sense of presence all its own. Individual band links feature Sadanobu Gassan’s hand-engraved characters (kesho yasuri me) which read the family motto and a rasp pattern (yasuri-me), which is also found on the tang (nakago) of the Gassan Family swords.
Crafted of distinctive recrystallized pure titanium, having undergone a deep layer hardening process and with a TIC (titanium-carbide) coating, the case’s unique design is brought out by a heat treatment applied to the pure titanium to evoke the crystalline nie patterns that appear on Japanese sword blades. The dial is protected beneath a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, features, curved indexes reminiscent of the curve in a katana’s blade, and a distinctive hishimaki-gara (diamond-shaped) pattern traditionally found on their handles.
Even at a pricetag of $8,000, it should be no surprise whatsoever that these have sold out. Still, you can be signed up to be alerted if they decide to add to the 500 piece limited edition, over at
