While the practice of checking one’s pulse manually has fallen by the wayside with modern medical devices, it can’t hurt to have a very hand backup device, or just own something that pays homage to that tradition. The Christopher Ward C9 Pulsometer Limited Edition Chronometer makes it easy to measure a heartbeat – and it is a pretty nice looking watch to boot.
The outer tachymeter scale on the otherwise very clean dial provides a simple reference for counting a heartbeat. Start when the second hand is at “0” and then count 30 beats, and the scale will read the heart rate. Read 26 seconds, that is 69 beats per minute; 18 seconds, that is 100 beats per minute. Apart from the bold red of the pulse scale, the white dial is very simply marked with applied white indexes. The second hand has a red tip to make it stand out, as well as a caduceus counterweight, and the hour and minute hands are blued. I think it is a very attractive presentation where the bold colors accentuate the function of the watch, not just the look of it.
The 40mm surgical stainless steel case houses a COSC certified Sellita SW200-1 Swiss automatic movement. With the COSC certification, the watch is accurate to -4/+6 seconds a day. The movement and branded rotor, with Geneva striping, are visible through the exhibition case back. Up front is a sapphire crystal, and the whole package is depth rated to 5 ATM. The watch is also fairly slim at 11.35mm, so it will certainly work with a suit and tie.
The Christopher Ward C9 Pulsometer is available on your choice of a brown or black alligator pattern embossed leather strap with the brand’s patented Bader deployment clasp, or on a stainless bracelet. The leather strap versions are $975, while the version on the bracelet goes for $1,095. The watch is a limited edition, capped at 250 pieces, and the brand is taking pre-orders for delivery in mid November. If you do opt for the 20mm strap, you can specify small, standard or large to get a better fit for your wrist.
