Against all reason, we at WWR are fans of what Panerai produces. Sure, they’re chunky, but they carry an iconic and almost retro style to them that just seems to hit the right spots. While the look is retro, the latest Panerai is definitely looking towards the future. Meet the Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteel.
Let’s break down that name a bit. Panerai and Submersible, we recognize those as the brand and the model line. QuarantaQuattro? That’s Italian for 44, which happens to be the diameter of the case. That leaves is with the eSteel. What’s that all about? This is Panerai’s material that makes use of recycled steel. Fortunately, metals behave quite well in that sort of usage, and it’s good to see the metal get reused.
It’s not just the case of the Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteel that is recycled. The straps for the watch are also recycled – both a recycled PET textile strap, as well as a recycled rubber one. All told, between the case and the straps, over half of the weight of this watch is recycled (72g of the total 137g weight). And so you don’t forget what you’re keeping out of the scrapheap, the eSteel markings appear on the dial and on the crown-protector mechanism.
Wrap this all around an automatic movement (and, in our opinion, mechanical movements are the eco choice as compared to a quartz, in terms of longevity – with maintenance – and what all could be recycled out of it. For all of those niceties, Panerai watches are about style as well. The Submersible line we’re familiar with, so what did they mix up here? Along with three gradient dial color options, they’re introducing a first with the bezel.
We’ve seen ceramic bezels on many brands, of course. Here, on the Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteel, they’re using a highly-polished ceramic insert, something that Panerai has never done before. This is a way to add some flash to the top of the watch without needing to rely on polishing the case or putting polished beveled edges on things. All in all, it should make for a rather unique look in the lineup, further differentiating this design.
Two of the versions of the Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteel are going to be launching in June 2022, while the blue dial version will come later this summer, in August 2022.
