We here at WWR – and I presume you, dear reader – like to think about the materials that go into our watches.  Whether it be good ol’ steel or precious metals on the cases, or even more exotic bits on the dial (such as enamels or meteorites), we like to have some variety as to what is on our watches.  Until now, I probably would have said that mother-of-pearl was the most visually stunning organic thing to end up on a dial, but these new watches from Khamama may have me reevaluating that.

You see, the watches from Khamama feature dials that are made (well, probably more accurate to say covered) with butterfly wings.  This is as recognizable (as no other critter in nature has these sorts of colorful structures) as it is eccentric.  I mean, how many accessories (yes, watches are an accessory as well as a tool) have you seen with real-deal butterfly wings on them?

Now, with Khamama, their claim here is that these wings are sustainably raised.  I’m not quite sure what that means in this context, but I guess it sounds good?  I will say this  – these watches look good – really good.  Of course, the focus is on those dials.  The 39mm steel case is subdue, and keeps the focus on the dials, as does the handset.  The sapphire crystal up top completes the cocoon for the watch, protecting the dial (and the Swiss ETA quartz movement) to a WR rating of 5 ATM (aka, no diving with this one).

Earlybird pricing starts at $334 for the Khamama, and the campaign has exceeded it’s funding goal, with things wrapping up on December 29, 2017.  We’ve been in discussions with the brand, and while we won’t be able to get one in for a hands-on review for you prior to the close of the campaign, we will be looking at one at some point.  For now, we’ll settle for these gorgeous photos. kickstarter
