I don’t currently own a chronograph, but have been temped to pick one up.  Fjord Timepieces recently lent me one of their chronos, the Agna, so I got to spend a bit of time with one.  The Agna is quartz driven dressy chronograph, so it works well when you have to time a business meeting or can’t let go of sports mode when you are wearing a suit.

On the wrist, the 43mm case is comfortable to wear, and the leather strap wears well.  The watch is very simple, something that goes well with the Nordic branding.  Watch functions are handled by the three central hands, and the chronograph is served by the two eyes at 6:00 for second and 9:00 for minutes.  A third sub dial, at 3:00, provides military time; and a date window is at 4:30.  The chrono pushers are above and below the crown on the right.

My loaner was a yellow gold plated stainless steel with a grey/silver dial.  The hour and minute hands are gold, as are the indices, while the second hand, sub dial hands, and printing are in black.  The watch is also available in rose gold plated stainless with matching hands, stainless with the light face or a contrasting black dial, and in a black case with the black dial.

Branding is pretty standard, with the name and logo on the dial, a minimal logo on the crown and the name on the buckle.  The caseback is screw down, so it is waterproof to 5 ATM.  There is no lume on the watch, which works well for the dressy element of the package, but it limits the sporting use of the chrono.  The packaging is well suited to the simple clean look; a white box with a lift off lid.

This is not a watch that would spend a lot of time on my wrist.  The chrono makes is more sporty than I would want in a straight dress watch, and the rest of the package is way too dressy to be a sports watch.  But then again, I don’t wear a suit to the office, I am almost always in a pretty sporty watch.  If I needed to wear a dress watch, I might get more use out of something that broadcasts my sporting nature.  I am not partial to yellow gold, so I may personally wear one of the other color options more often, but the watch overall is comfortable and has a clean, readable design.  fjordtimepieces.com

Review Summary
  • Brand & Model: Fjord Timepieces Agna Chronograph
  • Price: ~$300
  • Who’s it for?: Someone looking for their first skeletonized automatic watch
  • Would I wear it?:  Perhaps in the stainless or black versions.
  • What I’d change: Eliminate the 24-hour subdial
  • The best thing about it:  The clean look.
