Back at the start of the year, we talked to you about Mido celebrating it’s 60 year mark in existence, and that was marked with an anniversary watch. Well, it’s still the anniversary year, and there’s another watch that has been released to mark the occasion – the Mido Commander Big Date 60 year.

Now, just to be clear – this is not a 60-year movement. That would be quite the feat, but we’re simply not there. That is marking the anniversary, which means it’s a special take on the regular Mido Commander Big Date. And by regular, we mean a watch that still packs in a movement that gives you an 80-hour power reserve. Not 60 years, of course, but still a pretty impressive bit of work with storing energy in springs.

The Mido Commander Big Date 60 year is a limited edition, being produced in just 1,959 pieces (to mark the brand coming to life in 1959), and features something I’ve not seen in the Commander lineup before – a large, applied ’60’ up a the 12 o’clock mark. This is a nice bit of duality, since it marks the 60 minute mark, as well as calling out the 60-year anniversary. The remainder of the indices are what we’ve seen before, and the handset nicely mirrors the look and feel of those indices. This all spins over a sunburst grey dial. At the lower portion of that, we’ve got the big date display – something I do like – which does balance out the 60 up at the top.

This looks like another interesting – if minor – variant to the Mido Commander Big Date line, and is cleverly subtle way to celebrate the brand’s 60th anniversary. If you want to pick one up yourself, you’ll need to bring $1,090 to the sales counter. Quite a nice-looking piece, with a solid movement, in limited numbers. Thinking this one will do quite nicely, no? MidoWatches.com
