It wouldn’t be a world sporting event without Omega being involved.  To that end, they’ve produced a limited-edition Seamaster.   This watch is being limited to 1,948 pieces, as 1948 is the last time that Omega timed the Olympics in London.  Also of importance is the fact that 1948 is when the Seamaster was originally introduced.  There are two flavors of the watchthat will be available – the steel / yellow gold on a leather band, and the steel on a steel bracelet.  Both offer similar mechanics, including:

  • Chronometer
  • Small seconds
  • Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating
  • WR:  120 m for the leather-banded watch, 150 m for the steel-braceleted
  • Case size: 39mm and 44 mm
  • Automatic movements with co-axial escapements; min. power reserve of 48 hours
  • $6,800

Of course, the vintage-inspired one (hearkening back to that very first model) is the most intriguing to me – both in terms of aesthetics and heritage.  That said, both are very interesting pieces – but I have a feeling that you’re not going to be able to get a hold of the 1948 remake unless you’re somehow intimately involved with the Olympic festivities.
