Those of us in the watch world can sometimes get caught up in all of the craziness getting built out there – overly complicated movements, exotic materials, and all other sorts of nonsense. To draw a parallel, it’s the same way you could get wrapped up in specs and “gee whiz” with, say, supercars. Well, you know, sometimes you just want affordable, reliable transportation. And that translates to watches as well – you sometimes just want a clean, reliable design like we have with the Maven Watches Urban Scout.

Quartz

I mean, if you want reliability, it’s hard to beat a quartz movement. And when you’ve got Swiss Ronda preceding that, well, you’ve got a no muss, no fuss engine at the heart of the watch keeping you on time. Packed into a 40mm case that’s just 8mm thick (another major benefit of a quartz movement), you’ve got a watch that fits onto a variety of wrists. In our loaner, it was the blue dial paired to a light brown leather strap, but that could easily be changed out and made more summer-ready on a nylon strap in the 20mm lugs (in fact, that’s an option you can order it directly).

Dial

On the dial, the Maven Watches Urban Scout has more than a hint of a miltary influence, with the triangular indices, and hours and minutes tracks printed out at the points where the hands reach. Even so, those numerals are thinned out, and the hands are narrowed out as well, taking this in a direction that is very un-military. In other words, it’s a look at’s versatile and very casual. In many ways, a solid summer watch, except for the fact the WR isn’t actually specified. Given that (it’s just listed as water resistant) I’ll call it good for getting splashed, but nothing I’d advise swimming with.

Price

At the end of day, the Maven Watches Urban Scout gives you a clean and simple look that is nothing we’d consider minimalist, but still versatile. As reviewed, the Maven Watches Urban Scout runs $215 (as do the other leather strap varieties) while the ones on the nylon strap go for $198.
