If someone says “Hey, come over here and check out this two-register chronograph”, you’ve probably got a picture set in your mind of what it’s going to look like. That is, unless you’re a clever designer, and want to mix things up. Then you end up with Oak & Oscar Jackson Big Eye.

Now, to be fair, the idea of an asymmetrical dial layout is not new for a chronograph – it’s a design that calls back to the 1960s and ’70s. However, if you want it to not end up looking like the “zany eyes” emoji, you’ve got to step carefully. This is where the grey, white, and orange color palette that Oak & Oscar uses really strengthens the whole offering.

There’s another question you need to ask when you opt for any dual-register chronograph: what is it I’m giving up in terms of what the movement is recording? Often, you have to five up the hour accumulator. That decidedly does not happen on the Oak & Oscar Jackson Big Eye. Instead, the larger register is actually recording the minutes and hours. This is done via some clever stacking on the Eterna 3907M movement. Speaking of that movement – it’s completely regulated at the Chicago shop of Oak & Oscar, as well as the whole watch being hand-assembled.

As we all know, I am not a chronograph guy. That said, I do like how well the Oak & Oscar Jackson Big Eye fits into the larger “catalog” that they’ve been building, and I think it’s great they’re going with a design we don’t see a lot of, as well as leveraging a movement that we truly don’t see in many watches being offered, particularly from a smaller brand. If you’re thinking you might want to pick up a Oak & Oscar Jackson Big Eye for yourself, you may need to move quickly.

While the Oak & Oscar Jackson Big Eye was just announced today, only 50 of them are being planned. As we’ve seen with prior releases, that means that once all have been claimed at $3,150, that’s all there are. Yeah, maybe a re-release happens a few years down the line, but for now, I believe Fancher when says 50 are all that are being made.
