When it comes to watches launching on Kickstarter, you have the same old retread story (couldn’t find what we wanted, decided to make our own), and then there are some brands that come up with their own truly unique story.  In the case of this latest watch we’re featuring, it would be that the guy behind the brand is a descendant of Transylvanian nobility – so there’s a big influence from that region’s mythology and history.  Does that mean the Peren Son of the Dragon is worth your time?

Well, if you like stealthy, or blacked-out, chronographs, then yes, the Peren Son of the Dragon should be your cup of tea.  The big design cue to this one is the use of red (for, you know, blood and Dracula, one would assume) on the handset, indices, and the moon phase indicator (shame the watch launch didn’t coordinate with last year’s blood moon event).  For myself, I don’t draw much from that sort of lore (though I have read the stories), so for me, I think of this as an A-Team sort of palette.

Color usage aside, the Peren Son of the Dragon does offer some solid functionality. Courtesy of the ISA 8171 movement tucked away (yup, a quartz), you get a chronograph with 1/5 of a second accuracy, with the chrono registers being above the midline for whatever reason (guessing the movement puts them there).  You also have the aforementioned moonphase indicator (down at 6 o’clock) and a date display up at 12 o’clock.  In other words, in terms of functionality, you have everything you should need from  an everyday sort of watch.

I will freely admit that the Peren Son of the Dragon is not a watch aimed at me – I don’t care much for chronographs, and the back story of the brand is not compelling to me.  Also of note?  I do not prefer blacked-out watches either.  Surprisingly, though, I do find the Peren Son of the Dragon looks to be perfectly legible, and those red accents do stand out quite sharply.  So, while the watch is not for me, I think there is an audience for this, and the Swiss quartz movement will keep things running and accurate.  With pricing levels starting at $242 (the lower earlybird levels have been snapped up), it’s a fairly inexpensive watch to pick up.  Add in the fact that the project (which closes May 4) is well over-funded, and you have some assurance that the watch will be produced.  To that end, once product is available, we will work to get one in for a hands-on review to see how it works in the real world.  perenwatches.com
