Just in time for World Ocean Day, Shinola is introducing new versions of their versatile Detrola platform. This time around, the watches are known as the Shinola Detrola Sea Creatures.

Why Sea Creatures? Well, they’ve partnered up with #tide, a company that is reclaiming plastics out of the sea and recycling them into materials for other uses. Cleans up the ocean, and isn’t requiring us to make even more plastic, seems like a win-win to me. For this release, they used the plastic granules #tide produces to form the case, and then the yarn to create the woven textile straps that the watches feature.

Past those material (and color) changes, the Shinola Detrola Sea Creatures is the same Detrola, through and though. It has a 40mm case with a 10 ATM (100m) water resistance rating, and features the quartz Argonite 715 movement. This one comes, rather than in a traditional watch box, in a recycled felt and ocean plastic bag, enclosed in a hemp paper box – in other words, intended to be sustainable and recyclable.

The Shinola Detrola Sea Creatures is available today in the Sea Blue colorway, with the other four colors coming on June 25th. Whatever the color, you’ll be asked to provide $450 to wear this emblem of a cleaned-up ocean. Check out all the details, and order your own, over at shinola.com
