Often, when one has a hobby, that hobby then starts filtering its way into some of the other “stuff” you’ve got laying around. Really into cars? Well, you might have some scale models on the shelf, or posters up on the wall. Music is your thing? Well, you might have gold records and instruments adorning the space. If watches are your jam (and you’re reading this, so it’s probably the case) your options are a bit more limited. Sure, there are coffee table books and a few artists creating interesting pieces, but most of us probably feel limited to just clocks and display cases. Well, the folks at Berd Vay’e want to offer you another choice, with their Passage through Time sculpture.

Now, at first, you might think these look similar to the stuff you see kicking around on Etsy, where folks take apart old watches and create things – cuff links, pendants, or even mini sculptures. While those are cool in their own right, the Berd Vay’e Passage through Time sculptures are on a different level altogether. The smaller one is comprised of between 1,000 and 1,500 different watch parts, all cleaned and polished, and precisely placed in their Lucite forever home (the larger one ups the scale to contain 1,500 – 2,000 pieces). So, right off the bat, you’ve got something that is showcasing some of the history of our beloved watches, and given them new life.

Casting even farther back in the history of time is the shape the Berd Vay’e Passage through Time takes – that of an hourglass. For the small one, that takes the form of about a 10” height and 5” diameter (the larger one hits 15” x 7”). In other words, something that is sure to be noticeable, albeit in a bit more subtle way than hanging, say, an old watch dealer sign on the wall. Both sizes are limited to a run of 999 pieces, and will run you $2,900 (small) or $5,900 (large). So, something destined for the desk or bookshelf of the, shall we say, discerning collector. While a bit outside what my budget for home (or office) decor is, these are a fun bit of (serious) artistry with watch components, and these – along with the other sculptures the brand creates – are great to see in photos, and one can only image are even more impressive in person.
