I have to imagine that, being a brand that’s been around as long as Timex has, it must feel nice to have an extensive back catalog to dig into. I mean, retro nostalgia is all the rage, right? Maybe not everything was a winner, but they should know their own sales stats, and what might make sense to bring back. With that in view, we recently saw the Q Timex Marmont 1975 reissue announced.
When I first saw the photos of the Q Timex Marmont 1975, I thought I was perhaps looking at an older dive watch, due to the case shape. But that dial shows that to not be the case, and then the 50m WR rating further reinforces it. So, perhaps this is like when the surfer had to buckle down and get the office job, this is that case profile heading off into the work world.
Fantastical backstory aside, the Q Timex Marmont 1975 does look the part of the mid-70s. You’ve got goldtone through and through (on the steel case, the dial, and the hands and indices), you’ve got yourself a dome acrylic crystal, and then it’s all paired to a black leather strap with a (wait for it) gold-tone buckle.
Vintage looks aside (primarily in the case shape, and the tidy little battery door on the caseback), the Q Timex Marmont 1975 does what a Timex does best. It’s powered by a quartz movement, so it’s just reliable timekeeping. With the 50m WR rating, it’s up for everything short of a dip in the pool. The dial itself is stylized and clean, and creates a watch that won’t feel out of place at the office (remember the office?) if we ever go back to one.
Mix in the gold tones, and you’ve got a Timex that gets things done effortlessly, while giving you a more upscale look that the smartwatch is ever going to present. And, at $169, the Q Timex Marmont 1975 isn’t one that’s going to break the bank, especially if you’re looking for it to be the occasional, “dressing up time” watch.
