It’s starting to feel – to me – like Timex has come to terms with the platform they’ve got with the Marlin Automatic lineup, and have been customizing it for some interesting looks. We reviewed a California dial version recently, and now they’ve come out with one extending their Peanuts lineup, the Timex Marlin Beagle Scout.

In terms of the watch itself – how it works, how it fits, and the like – this should be no different than the Cali dial version we reviewed. So I’d suggest you check that out to see what it’s like in the real world. So, then, what makes the Timex Marlin Beagle Scout interesting? Well, it’s obviously that Peanuts partnership. The characters created by Charles Schulz are endearing and instantly recognizable.

And in our house, they are in high demand. Since our oldest daughter discovered the Peanuts comic strip books at the library, they’ve been in constant rotation, being read and read and read. Plenty of Peanuts characters, and there was even a pilgrimage out to the museum and ice rink out in California. It was from that trip that they brought me back two different Beagle Scout patches (one with Snoopy, one with Woodstock).

Why was that? Well, I’m actually an Eagle Scout (and yeah, I’m proud of that accomplishment), so the meshing of my path and the enjoyment my kids get from Peanuts, well, it was just serendipity. On the watch, it’s done subtly, but noticeably. The dial is finished in a dark color (looks black from the photos) with a sketch of troop leader Snoopy hiking along. Side note – in my head canon, he’s got a National Parks Ranger hat on, because those things just look awesome.

So, sure, Snoopy is there front and center on the Timex Marlin Beagle Scout – but it’s not so overbearing that I think you’d be catching grief for wearing a “kids cartoon” watch. And I’d argue, well, the Peanuts are timeless, and a great number of us grew up with them and appreciate them, across generations. If you weren’t into Scouting, perhaps the $259 Timex Marlin Beagle Scout isn’t for you. For the Scouters, though, it’s the watch equivalent of comfort food. Now they just need to up the WR rating so it’s really ready for camping… timex.com
