The watches created by Uniform Wares have been interesting beasts. They create watches that are very clean, both in terms of the styling executed, as well as the lack of branding and text on the dial. While prior watches from the brand have been on the more casual end of the spectrum, they have now introduced a much dressier creation. Let’s take a closer look at the Uniform Wares C40.

As you might guess from the model name, the Uniform Wares C40 comes in a 40mm diameter. A quick glance at the watch confirms that this is very much a dress piece. The simple three-hander offers long, slender hands that reach to their respective tracks, and the inclusion of the day/date complication ensures that this is watch that has utility for daily wear as well. On that particular feature, I was pleased to see that they managed to leave the 3 o’clock indice full sized. That then means, however, that the day/date window is moved in a good bit. This is likely due to the size of the quartz ETA movement inside more than anything else. It’s a pity they couldn’t have gotten the date showing up more towards the edge of the dial.

With the aforementioned quartz movement, that keeps the overall case height fairly slender (only 8mm), as are the bevel around the domed sapphire crystal (which has an AR coating) and the tapered 18mm lugs. Under the crystal, you have a choice of three different dial colors – silver with black indices/hands, cream with a rose gold case and handset, or black with polished indices and hands. Of the three, the black dial version stands out the most to me, especially paired to the optional Milanese mesh bracelet. Of course, that could be due to it calling to mind the Tissot Visodate (reviewed here), which I also looked rather favorably upon.

Overall, the Swiss-made Uniform Wares C40 is a fairly attractive collection. You can pick one up in the range of $880 – $1410 (£550 – £880), depending on the strap you choose. Yeah, those prices do seem fairly steep for a quartz-driven model, even with the day/date complication added in. If you’re looking for an unbranded watch to fly under the radar, though, your choices are a bit more limited. As for me, it’s a bit steep for my tastes (and budget), but I am curious if any of our readers are temped by the Uniform Wares C40 – let us know in the comments! uniformwares.com

Watch Overview

  • Brand & Model: Uniform Wares C40
  • Price: $880 – $1,410
  • Who we think it might be for: This is for the guy (or gal) who wants a dressier watch that detests branding on their person, and also wants the pick-up-and-go reliability of a quartz movement
  • Would I buy one for myself based on what I’ve seen?: No, not particularly. In the end, it’s simply priced out of a range I would consider for quartz
  • If I could make one design suggestion, it would be: Get the day/date display moved closer to the edge of the dial
  • What spoke to me the most about this watch: The thin, clean style of the watch
