Undone has had a few Batman watches so far, but they’ve been more tied to the modern era of the Dark Knight Detective. That is, until this one. While it’s safe to say that the 1989 Batman cemented the hero in my teenage mind as my favorite, it was of course the reruns of the 1960s Batman that first introduced me to the character. Which is what I find so intriguing about the just-announced Undone Dark Knight Retrospective.

At first glance, the Undone Dark Knight Retrospective looks way darker than you’d expect from a 60’s-Batman-inspired piece, but think about the Batmobile. Derived from a Lincoln Futura, it was a glossy black, with red accents through out. While it’s more of a satin finish here, it’s black throughout, with red accents. Those accents appear on the dial (as you might expect) but also in the form of an anodized aluminum ring that’s set under the crystal.

And that crystal? Holy domes of glass, Batman! You may have seen some highly-domed crystals, but this mineral crystal is one of the most extreme, enclosing what you might consider to be the bezel on any other watch, and settling back to the backplane of the case. This, of course, calls to mind those curved glass windshields that were on the 1960s Batmobile, and I am here for it.

To maintain a tie to the modern era, the Undone Dark Knight Retrospective does have a nod to the upcoming Robert Pattinson Batman film. In that movie, the Riddler is supposed to be the villain of choice (at least from what trailers have shown us) and here, when the lights go down, you’ve got glowing question marks all over the place. Puts me a bit more in mind of the Schumacher era (may we never repeat it), but it’s a cool trick. I mean, I’d put the John Astin Riddler (again, from the 60s) as my favorite portrayal of the character, so, to quote John, I’ll allow it.

The Undone Dark Knight Retrospective was just announced today, and is being made available in a limited edition of 999 pieces. Each of those run $499. Perhaps a bit steep for an NH72 movement-equipped watch, but that super dome (and the Batman licensing) don’t come cheap, old chum. Check it all out over at undone.com
