Project Watches is a company that is constantly looking for new ways to use elements of design and art in the way a watch tells time. There are times I think they are a little obtuse, and there are times that the designs work, and there times where the inspiration is a little obtuse, but the design still works. This is the case with the Projects Watches Suprematism. I will get into the basis for the design in a moment, but for me, the design works.
The inspiration comes from a Russian abstract art movement that was, in turn, inspired by avant-garde, poetry. As the saying goes, “I don’t know art, but I know what I like.” I like this design. The three wide blocks are well suited to tell time, and in spite of the abstract inspiration, the dial is easy to read. The 37mm case uses a lugless design, with the case sitting like a puck on the silicone strap. The movement is quartz (probably a Miyota based on other watches).
Overall, it looks like a fun, wearable piece. I could see it at a gallery opening, and I could see it on a wrist in a more casual work environment or out on the town for a casual evening. It is not the sportiest of designs, but that is OK, Projects Watches isn’t going for the outdoor activity market, at least not yet. Priced at $140, it is something you could wear on occasion and not feel like you wasted your money, and the size is also good for smaller wrists, so it would be a good unisex option. projectswatches
