Yesterday, we started to take a look at the Hurricane from Charmex.  We covered some of the company history, and the aviation cues in the watch.  Today, we’ll get into the movement in use.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, all those sliderule calculations are going to be way off unless you have a movement that you can trust the accuracy of, isn’t it?  And here the Hurricane definitely shines.  Underneath that red dial you’ve got a COSC-certified 7750 Valjoux movement doing the heavy lifting.  What does that mean?  Just know this – it means you’ve got an extremely accurate chronograph movement (you can read up on it here); the presentation case also includes the certification document, so you know just how accurate your particular example is.

Being that accurate, it should go without saying that the movement is beating away at 28,800 oscillations / hour, and has other niceties such as 25 jewels, a 48 hour power reserve, shock protection, and magnetic resistance.  (If you’d like to know more about this specific movement, you can read up here and here).

So,  given the quite capable movement, that means we should have a good bit of functionality – and you’re right.  Of course, you have the basics such as hours, minutes, and seconds.  And on the seconds front, take a look at the subdial at the 9 o’clock position.  It’s actually a propeller.  Yes, it doesn’t tell you where in the minute you are, but forget that.  That propeller is just a plain cool bit of motion on the dial to catch your eye.

Tomorrow, we’ll take a look at the rest of the functionality referenced by the dial.
