While I only became aware of the Techne brand earlier this year (here’s part 1 of my review of the Sparrowhawk), I’ve really become a fan of the pieces that Franck is turning out. While the Sparrowhawk we looked at before was a mecha-quartz (combination mechanical and quartz movement), today’s example is a fully mechanical.
We actually brought you an overview of the piece back in May (you can read that here). In the intervening time, however, a sample was sent over for us to take a look at.
First off, we’ll cover the movement. As I mentioned in the earlier post, we’ve got a Miyota 8217 in it, which isn’t as common. That said, it’s still a reliable Miyota, and I experienced no issues with it. The movement adds a 24 hour register, which I really like. It gives a bit of visual interest to what would otherwise be a plain three-hander dial.
Also, it’s handy when you’re setting the piece, especially if you’re in the habit (as I am) of having a watch sit for some time (and thereby depleting the power reserve) as you cycle through your collection. With this one, in particular, I like how the 9 on the subdial is actually also the 9 on the main dial – snazzy little design choice.
On the wrist, it’s got a nice light feel to it, so you don’t even notice that it’s strapped on. Of course, that may be in part due to the NATO strap that it comes on. While the strap itself is serviceable, it’s definitely not the softest or most flexible I’ve seen. This is one area you may want to add something from the aftermarket.
With the PVD case (again, a nice smooth application) the dark green (as our sample had) or bright orange NATO is a great choice. And, with the 50m water resistance, you don’t need to worry about this one getting hit with a splash from the sprinkler this summer.
I think this is another outstanding piece from Techne, with styling that definitely matches the rest of the collection. For just under $300 (it’s currently on sale) here, you’re getting a solid automatic, sapphire crystal, and a PVD coated case that would make a great addition to any collection.
UPDATE (July 9. 2012): We just learned that the Goshawk passed ISO 2281 certification for water resistance to 50 meters. It also passed ISO 764, for anti-magnetism to 4,800 ampers/meter.
