When it comes to Corum, you might think of them (as we do) more along the lines of something like their Bubble designs, or perhaps something a bit more yachting-oriented. Yes, those are mainstays of their lineup, but just because you’ve got safe and comfortable, that doesn’t mean they can’t explore and experiment. And wow, what an experiment the Corum Concept turned out to be.

While a lot of the focus for the Corum Concept is going to be on the movement and how it’s showcased, we want to stop a moment and consider the materials they’re using. The case is of titanium, no surprise there. Until you realize that it’s recycled titanium. The strap? Sure, it’s a velcro textile (something we don’t commonly see on luxury designs), but it’s also recycled. Yes, the watch is a one-off, but this commitment to figuring out how to re-use materials is to be applauded, and perhaps we’ll see that worked into something a bit more mainline in the future.

Now, on to that movement. Here, it’s relying on a flying tourbillon movement running at 3 Hz, and manages a 90-hour power reserve (which would help explain the lower beat rate). To get it mounted into that recycled titanium case, the movement is set between two sapphire plates, so that it looks like it’s floating. At least, until the eye is drawn to the aventurine dial/backplate, which of course gives you that starry sky look. So, in many ways, I’m envisioning this as a very mechanical satellite up in the sky.

Want to get one? Well, friend, you’re out of luck. This is a one-off concept watch – at least at this point. Should it end up going to production in some form, the estimated price tag is CHF 420’000, which is about $475,000. So, if that’s your price bracket, I’m guessing you’ll be wanting to get in touch with Corum. corum-watches.com
