It’s summertime, and based on looking at my history, that means it’s the right time of year for Scuro to have another watch hit the market.  This time around, we’ve got a rather interesting case construction coming in the form of the Scuro Volante.

While I would say the prior designs, while original, were coming in a tried and true sort of look, with the Scuro Volante we’re headed in a new direction for the brand.  With the case made of titanium (in the center) and carbon fiber (on the outer portions as an upgrade) we get a very, very architectural look to things.

Overall, the Scuro Volante presents as a sport watch, with the solid-look to the case (even with the carved out bits on the side case).  When you get to the dial, though, you see that things are a bit different.  The dial (made of carbon fiber) is barely there, which allows you to see that Miyota movement.  Fortunately, things are kept decently readable (at least as far as we can tell from the photos) with the color handset, and the chapter ring with the applied and luminous indices.

Sure, the design of the Scuro Volante may not be for absolutely everyone (must love skeletonized dials), but there is a lot going on here.  Frankly, for titanium, you’d expect a high price tag, but here, the early birds start at just $280 (the forged carbon side case is an additional – but affordable – upgrade (around $28).

Along with all of this, you can also opt to add on a pair of polarized sunglasses, which have a nice, sleek style to them.  Additionally, they keep the lightweight theme of the Scuro Volante going, as the frames are made from a magnesium/aluminum alloy.  This, along with the polarized polycarbonate lens, means the shades are just 28.5g – which should be very comfortable on the face.  And at just $35 that’s a nice price for polarized shades.

So, yeah, this is a pretty interesting Kickstarter, for sure.  Between the Scuro Volante and the add-on sunglasses, there are a LOT of interesting materials at play here that will make for light and tough items to strap on wrist and slap on your face.  As of the time of this writing, the Kickstarter is at about 36% funded, with the campaign closing out on August 17, 2018.  Kickstarter.com

  • Price: $280 and up
  • Who we think it might be for: You like skeletonized dials, and you’re in to interesting mixes of materials
  • Would I buy one for myself based on what I’ve seen? The watch, perhaps not, but those sunglasses are quite nice
  • If I could make one design suggestion, it would be: Not everyone is in to skeletonized dials – perhaps a full CF option would be nice
  • What spoke to me the most about this watch: For a young brand, this is an ambitious design, and hitting with materials we generally only see from rather high-end brands
