Welcome to our regular Sunday feature, Watch Video Rewind, where we post watch related videos from the web to highlight interesting watches or interesting aspects of watch making. There are a lot of start-up companies that talk about bringing watchmaking back to the US, and a couple of smaller brands that are already doing just that, but I thought I would share a few videos from when the US had a large watch manufacturing presence.
First up is a little mini-movie that Hamilton produced in order to advertise their watchmaking capabilities. The first few minutes are pretty interesting, as it highlights the way it used to be, when giving a watch for a special occasion was a fairly normal event.
Elgin produced watches for over 100 years, and this Illinois based firm had the largest dedicated watchmaking operation in the world. Of course, that ended almost 50 years ago. Hall of fame basketball player Elgin Baylor’s name comes from the watch company.
Finally, our last video is a history lesson on how watchmaking is tied to the industrialization of the United States. The Waltham Watch Company industrialized watchmaking and created the industrial line approach to watchmaking.
