I know I’ve featured some watch cases made of out differing materials.  As a matter of fact, I’m quite honestly drawn to something that features a material other than stainless steel.  As of now, I think Samal Design takes the prize for the most intriguing, and unexpected, material use in a watch.

The most intriguing aspect of the piece is of course the 42mm case made of concrete.  Aside from just being unique, the forming techniques available for the material allowed for an intriguing design in the case – plenty of angles.

All of those straight lines are then carried forward onto the dial design, along with the explosion of hands (there’s six of them).  Why six?  This is actually a quartz-driven chronograph.  Though, I have some misgivings for how easy it would be to actually track the time bring recorded, as there don’t seem to be any indices on the sub “dials”.

Getting back to the case, the concrete is actually surrounding a more conventional steel core, which, along with the mineral crystal, gives you a water resistance rating of 50 meters.  So, you won’t go diving, but it should hold up to an occasional splash (and it would be interesting to see the water patterns in the case too, no?)

If you’d like to  add one of these to your collection, you’ll need to prepare your wallet for a shock.  Depending on the model (they’re all limited editions under 150 pieces each) range from just under $1200 to around $1500.  You can head here and get your pre-order in now; watches are expected to ship in November.
