Welcome back to our weekly installment, where we have a quick look at some interesting watches and articles that have popped up over the last week, as well as taking a second look at what some of our more popular articles this week were. Today, we’ve got a DIY smartwatch and a new Italian watch that has an intriguing display. After those, we’ll highlight (as usual) some of our more popular posts from the last week. Read on to see what we’ve got in store for you.

Smartwatches and things like fitness trackers are collectively lumped into a “wearables” category these days, it seems. Sensors and electronics continually shrink, and it’s really amazing what can be effectively packaged to wear on your wrist. If you’re of a mind to not really care for what the major brands are creating, though, you most certainly could work to create your own, as this post over at Hack A Day shows. With an Arduino, OLED display, and a battery, you’re ready to make your own device. Check out their writeup, and then head on here (http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-your-own-smart-watch/?ALLSTEPS) for a step-by-step process.

Prior to this writeup over at DreamChrono, I wasn’t aware of the Carlo Ferrara brand – which, for a company that’s been around since 1991, is a bit surprising. It just goes to show that no matter how much you think you know about watches, there’s always something else to uncover. With the watches he’s creating, they run on the concept of a “dancing regulator”. Basically, rather than hands rotating around the dial, they instead move up and down in slots. This makes for a look rather unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Sure, there may be a bit of a learning curve on reading it, but once that’s down, you’ve definitely got a watch none of your buddies will have on their wrist.

Carbon 1

And now, let’s come back to our own pages.  First up, we’ve got a rather unique take on pairing your phone to your watch.  Many times, it’s done in via  Bluetooth lashup so the watch can display data it pulls from the phone, all while draining the battery on both devices.  The EnrgyBioncs Carbon is looking to reverse that, by putting a solar rechargeable battery pack into the watch to help fuel up your watch.  Check out what Matt had to say about it right here.

Magrette Leoncino 1

Then again, there are many folks who would prefer to keep their watches and phones quite separate, thank you very much.  For those folks, there are innumerable options for a mechanical watch. On of our favorite brands over the past few years has been Magrette, who has whipped up quite an extensive line of watches, all featuring the same cushion-style case.  Later this year, they’re mixing things up, and introducing a new case style, which you can read about here.

AVI-8-Hawker-Harrier-II (5)

And last, but certainly not least, I’ll go ahead an plug our latest giveaway, which is for the AVI-8 Hawker Harrier AV-4003-01.  It’s got quite an interesting display, and has gathered a nice bit of attention.  Head on over here and get your entries in.

With that, we’ll wrap things up. As always, if there’s something you think we should be covering, feel free to drop us a line. If you bring something up that we end up writing about, we’ll be sure to tip our hats (electronically, if not literally) in your general direction.
