There’s just something about a fully luminous dial. I had a quartz Lorus in college that had a fully luminous dial, and that thing was just fun. Think about how brightly the hands and indices on your watch glow when you come in from the sun – and then apply that to the whole dial. It’s a neat look, and one that I think is great when you’re spending a lot of time outside. Earlier this year, a chronograph got that treatment, and became the TWCO Lumecore.
TWCO Lumecore: what it is
If you’ve seen a TWCO chronograph before, this is going to look familiar. They’ve taken their robust quartz chronograph platform (with the clicky snapback courtesy of the VK64 movement). On top of that, they ripped out their dial, and put a full coat of lume on the dial. Over that, you’ve got applied (non-luminous) indices, and a skeletonized handset. But that’s ok, because you’ve got the bright green glow of the dial making it legible at night, and then the black-on-white color scheme in the full light.
Why we like it
For starters, if you’re into chronographs (or think you want to be), it’s hard to argue against a mecha-quartz as a good starting point. You get the accuracy of quartz, the lovely tactile feel of a mechanical reset, and best of all, it’s usually housed in a very affordable watch (which the TWCO Lumecore definitely is).
Next, the design of the TWCO chronograph is clean and crisp, and feels modern while giving some nods to the icons that preceded it. With it being just over 12mm thick, it’s also going to be very comfortable, not standing too tall from the wrist.
Finally, of course, is that all lume dial. If you’ve never experienced a dial like this, they are a treat, and just good fun when it starts to get dark around the campfire (or in the movie theater).
