Even though I’ve been covering watches for a decent amount of time now, it is still a pleasant surprise to come across a brand doing something unexpected, especially one that has been established for a bit. That is especially helpful when they decide to apply the appellation of Retro to a new model – at least there is some back catalog to derive from. That is precisely what we have here with the Pierre DeRoche TNT Royal Retro 43.
When it comes to the watches from Triwa that we’ve taken a look at, they’ve generally been rather colorful – either in the case pattern (as seen here) or just in the overall aesthetic (as seen in this review). This time around, I want to focus some attention on a watch that’s a bit more monochromatic in its presentation – the Triwa Stirling Hvalen.
Christopher Ward is a brand that certainly needs no introduction to readers of this site. We have long been fans of their affordable styles, and have followed with interest their forays into some higher-end models, and variants of existing models. Today, we have one of those variants for you – the new Christopher Ward C11 Titanium Extreme 1000.
Today, we are going to take a venture into luxury watch territory that I do not often take us on here at WWR. Jacquet Droz is part of the Swatch Group portfolio, and they have been making some rather exquisite-looking watches, as well as some perfectly amazing novelties (just check out this Bird repeater). What’s most interesting to me about the Jacquet Droz Grande Second Quantieme Ivory Enamel is the dial material.
I have long been a fan of the creations coming from Gustafsson and Sjögren (aka GoS) Watches, with the inclusion of damascus-process steel. They pair the amazing patterns they fold into the steel with treatments that introduce colors evocative of different scenes, to great effect. While many dress watches tend to go for a look that will not attract undue attention, the GoS Bifrost instead has a stunning dial that invites commentary.
Not many of us are going to be able to afford a truly limited edition car, let alone one that is as steeped in racing history as a Ferrari GTO. After all, one did sell at auction for the princely sum of $52,000,000. But what if you could own a piece of one? A small sliver, but a piece none the less? That is what Christoper Ward is offering with the C70 3527 GT Chronometer, a bit of the metal from one of these cars built into the watch.
As we’ve written on these pages before, the Venn diagram overlap between watch enthusiasts and car enthusiasts is not small, by any means. Mix in a specific brand, and it might limit things some, but for those the brand meshes with, it’ll be right up their alley. So, is the Frederique Constant Healey GMT 24H for you?
I view a lot of crowd funded projects, and have backed a couple of watch projects myself, but every once in awhile a project just blows up on a crowd funding site, and that is what has happened to the Ritot Projection watch on Indiegog. With the project slated to end funding on August 21., the watch project has already garnered over $600,000 in pledges against a goal of $50,000. And it is a very cool concept. I just wonder if it will ever make it past the point of being a concept.
Projects Watches is an interesting brand, putting out low cost quartz watches driven not be fashion, but by design aesthetic. We have covered them on our pages before, and recently they reached out to us for a new watch they are debuting, the Projects Watches Twirl. The brand’s tag line for the watch is “a new interpretation of time,” but I see it more as a unique but still readable variation on the standard 2-hander.
If you’ve been reading here for any amount of time, you know I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for New Zealand brand Magrette. Most of this stems from the fact that the Regattare 2011 (link) was the first automatic I ever had. As of late, though, it’s of course influenced by the tremendous value I feel you get your for money. You may also realize that I love a good GMT complication. While this new watch doesn’t quite hit that mark, the Magrette Dual Time has a fun trick up it’s sleeve.
