Mr. Jones Watches Continuum: what it is
The Continuum is a watch first (but perhaps not foremost). As such, it needs to keep time, and it does that via a jump-hour display. That hour is visible in a porthole window on the rocket. And the minutes? Those are indicated via the meteor shooting along the outside edge of the dial. That, of course, leads us into the artwork gracing the dial side of this watch.
The artwork
Mr. Jones has long creating visually interesting watches, and the Continuum definitely goes off into the realm of retro futurism. This watch was designed with illustrator Jacqueline Colley. Here’s what she has to say about the design:
This watch is a love letter to retro-futurism: with bold graphics, candy colours, and that sense that in space, there’s no such thing as up or down. There’s something magical about how space bends time and perspective, and I wanted to reflect that playful weirdness; a pop culture galaxy where anything goes.
This design is a natural evolution of my visual world—there’s lots of layered detail, bold shapes, and a bit of disorder! I like to create scenes that reward closer inspection, the watch face gave me the perfect opportunity to do that on a new scale. It was a fun challenge to fit in characters, movement, and a little narrative while still making it readable and wearable. A world you can get lost in for a moment, even if you’re just checking the time.
Wrapping things up
It’s an interesting look for sure, and certainly grabs on to a whimsical look at what we thought space exploration might be like.
