Wow. If you are really into vintage-inspired watches, this is the time for you. Specifically, if you are in the original MilSubs (you know, just like that famous Rolex Submariner and the like), then this really is the time for you. Janis Trading recently made a huge splash with their NTH Subs (full review forthcoming), and now Hager comes along with their interpretation of things, with the Hager Aquamariner.
Spinnaker is a company with a large catalogue of watches. They approached us to offer a few for review, and we said yes.
Here’s how this part of the process works. Some enterprising soul will email us and offer a review, and we’ll talk amongst ourselves about all the things right with what we see, and all the things wrong with it, and then Patrick will say we pass on it. He’s often right. We set out to only review the best of the best, the things that appeal to us.
If I tell you we have a new dive watch in for review, you get a certain mental picture forming in your head. Or, say we got something in that lays claim to amazing durability, and another sort of picture is set in your mind. This is based both on watches you have (or do) own, as well as what sort of watches you have been exposed to in reviews and the like. Well, get yourself ready, because todays watch will crush, decimate, and otherwise destroy many of those pre-conceived ideas of what a durable diver can be. Now, if you are going to introduce a new watch, and want to ensure that people know it’s a diver, calling it a Submarine is certainly the way to go. That’s what we have here with the recently-announced G. Gerlach Submarine.
There must be something in the water in the Netherlands, as there have been more than a few interesting watches – all divers – coming out of the country over the last year. The latest to come to our attention from those shores is the TWCO Salvage Diver.
Dive watches. Who likes ’em? Well, just about everybody. How do you make a tool watch like a diver more useful? Via complications, of course. One of my personal favorites is the GMT, and that is what you get (as well as the date) with the just announced moVas GMT III Diver. Oh, you also get a somewhat quirky shape for a dive watch all in the bundle.
When it comes to watches, many folks will often have a a favorite watch from particular brands. Less common is an expressed interest in the wider line, especially with the indie watch brands. For me, at least, Gavox is one of those brands that I think have something in all of their models. Sure, the earlier watches we very much similar to what we saw from Techne, but that’s not a bad thing. As of late, though, Gavox has really stepped up their game, with introductions of watches like the Aurora and Squadron. Their most recent model, the Gavox Avidiver, shows the brand continuing to branch out.
What’s that? You say you’re trying to create a watch via crowdfunding, and you arrived at this idea because nothing else out there met your idea of a perfect watch? While this may ring true for many creators, it’s a line that has been trotted out time and again, and it simply does not get our engines turning over. As we spoke about in our initial hands-on review of the Filson Journeyman GMT, I view the Filson line of watches as a way for Shinola to sort of play around with their designs a bit, and take things in slightly different directions. While I would not go so far as to say that the Filson Dutch Harbor is breaking new ground, it is definitely a rather comely implementation of a dive watch.
