Let’s keep the theme from last week going and talk about another porter this week, shall we? This time around, we’re going back to one of my favorite local (to Chicago) brewers, and tasting the Revolution Coffee Eugene.

As you might expect from a porter, the Revolution Coffee Eugene comes out of the can rather dark. Like the other smaller brands I’ve been checking out, this is one that has little-to-no head on the pour, which is a good thing in my book. Sure, that nitro-infused one you can get off of a Guinness looks interesting, but for casual sipping at home, so long as there’s some carbonation, I don’t need the pillow of foam on top of my glass.

On the nose, you pick up a hint of chocolate from the Revolution Coffee Eugene. On the tongue, you’re first hit with that dry, sort of papery taste that stouts tend to have. That gives way to some hints of vanilla and coffee, and finally a slightly smokey aftertaste (nowhere near a smoked porter, but that’s a different animal altogether). How does the brand get that coffee in there? Turns out, they cold-steep it in a tank with whole bean coffee from Dark Matter for a week. So, think of it like a buzzy cold brew, if you like.

Coming in at a 6.8% ABV, this is one that I would put into the slow-sipper category, but it’s not an overpowering flavor, so it’s not one you’re immediately tired of after a cans-worth. If you do go back for a second (no judging here), just play it safe, and keep away from the steering wheel, please.
