I don’t know about you, but I’ve been seeing more and more about the practice of kintsugi, where pottery is repaired, but not in a way where the mending is hidden. Instead, it’s highlighted via the use of gold, given a sort of well-earned beauty to a piece (you can read more about it here). Now we have a watch that honors that idea, the UNDONE x Simple Union: Sometsuke.

This is not the first time that UNDONE and Simple Union have paired up (we wrote about the prior one here), and as before, we’ve got the Katazome fabric used for the strap that is paired onto the UNDONE x Simple Union: Sometsuke. Where things get rather different is on the dial.

First off, you’ve got a porcelain-look dial via glossy enamel paint. I’m guessing that was done here, rather than trying to generate a “true” porcelain dial, given the need to properly support things (and, likely, some cost controls). Because, as you can see, there’s a very large crack and “missing” piece on the dial. This gives us the idea of something being broken, and then repaired in the kintsugi method.

That’s done rather cleverly with a gold-toned NH71 automatic movement taking the place of the precious metal; you can also get a clear view of the movement via the exhibition caseback. Back on the dial side of things, we’ve also got another take on a California dial (as we saw on the Undone Arabian Nights), with Japanese characters on the top half (the Simple Union logo takes up the 12 o’clock spot) and then the Arabic numerals appearing on the lower half. If you want to pick up one of the 300 pieces being produced, $488 will make it so. undone.com
