A little bit ago, we brought you word (seen here) of a new collaboration between Armitron and Johnny Wujek. Since then, we’ve been spending time with a few of the new models. Today, we’ll dive into the Armitron Trilogy.

First off, why Trilogy? That’s because for this lineup (which is part of the larger Armitron Loves Johnny collection), there are three different color schemes available for the model. We reviewed it in the black/purple scheme, but there’s also a chocolate one, as well as a green/gold. Perhaps it’s because I have a lot of lilacs around us in the springtime, it was this version that felt the most ready for spring, despite the all-black case and bracelet.

At it’s core, the Armitron Trilogy is going for the look and feel of the classic steel sports watch. And sure, it is a steel case and bracelet, which gives a good bit of heft to the piece (143g), despite the quartz movement. The bracelet feels fairly solid, despite the jangly noise it makes up in the lug area.

In terms of overall design, there’s no avoiding that the Armitron Trilogy is a large watch (at 45mm with 22mm lugs). Here, it works well, as it allows that lavender dial to really pop. With all of that real estate, it’s surprising that the indices and hands aren’t a touch wider. In relation to each other, the proportions are good; it’s just against the overall size of the watch, they feel a bit undersized. For that, readability is not hindered at all, either in the light or the dark.

The one decision decision I just don’t get with the Armitron Trilogy is the inclusion of a tachymeter bezel. I guess you could try to use it if you had the seconds hand in the right spot, but really, you’re not timing the speed of anything with that bezel on a three-handed watch.

Around back, you’ve got a caseback that’s been etched with a crab, ensuring you remember that this was a special collaboration with Johnny. For a colorful $150 watch, the Armitron Trilogy seems like a playful approach to a larger wrist presence that brings some color along, while still not having it feel out of place for daily wear.
