Welcome back to our weekly installment, Watching the Web, where we have a quick look at some interesting watches and articles that have popped up over the last week, as well as taking a second look at what some of our more popular articles this week were. Today, we’ve got an adventure in making your own watch, and a watch that honors the Wright Brothers.  After those, we’ll highlight (as usual) some of our more popular posts from the last week. Read on to see what we’ve got in store for you.

Joshua-Munchow_Mark-1-prototype_Front

First up, over at Quill & Pad, they’ve got a great article covering Joshua Munchow’s adventures in creating his own watch.  While he admits that he used a pre-built movement (a wise move for a beginner), everything else was built up by hand.  It’s a very entertaining read, and does make me wonder if this is a path I would take were I still back in my machine shop working days.

Bremont-wright-flyer-71

Next up, over at aBlogtoWatch, James Stacey covers the latest  limited-edition watch from the crew over at Bremont.  Their limited edition watches generally have something very cool to them, and this one is no exception.  It’s classic looks aside, this one has two very cool things going for it – it’s the first in-house movement (check out the ABTW update about the movement) for Bremont, and the rotor actually has a piece of the fabric wing from the Wright Flyer.  Rare stuff, indeed!

Ralston-Recon-6-01

With that, we’ll turn our attention back to our own pages.  First up, we’ve got a Kickstarter project that unfortunately didn’t make the funding cut (though, reading through the updates, it sounds like backers will still get watches).  The Ralston Recon 6 is billed as a survival watch, and packs some goodies in it’s extra-tall case.  Think of it as one of those survival knives, but in watch form.  Given that our pals over at Smith & Bradley are behind this, I’m curious to see if these actually make it into the wider market, or if the Kickstarter project will seal its fate.

Muehle-Glashuette_Kampfschwimmer_M1-28-92-NB

For a watch you can pick up, we’ve got perennial favorites Muhle-Glashütte with their new Kampfschwimmer.  While we’re more used to seeing pilot watches designed to true military specs, this is the first one (at least in recent memory) designed to Special Forces specs.  It’s got good looks, a great bezel design, and has some interesting timing tricks up it’s sleeve.  Check out the full writeup over here.

Last, but not least, we’ve got a few days left in our current giveaway. Appropriate for the month of July, we’ve got the American-built Smith & Bradley Sans-13 up for grabs. Head on over here to get your entries in.

With that, we’ll wrap things up. As always, if there’s something you think we should be covering, feel free to drop us a line. If you bring something up that we end up writing about, we’ll be sure to tip our hats (electronically, if not literally) in your general direction.
