All the way back in 2015, we went hands-on with the Shinola Black Blizzard. It was the first time I had handled titanium from Shinola, and it also marked a foray for the brand into building stories around how they named their watches. This time around, we’ve got the yin to the Blizzard’s yang in the form of the Shinola White Hurricane.

This time, rather than calling to mind the 1930s Dust Bowl, the Shinola White Hurricane instead points to the Great Lakes Storm of 1913, a blizzard that had hurricane-force winds. That’s well before my time, but I can say that while we’re used to tornadoes now and again, the winds we normally get with the snow are nowhere that severe. It’s an interesting bit of history for the region, and fits in with Shinola calling Detroit home.

For the Shinola White Hurricane, the titanium case has gotten a bit bigger, coming in at 48mm. Now, I don’t care how big your wrist is, that’s a big ol’ watch you’re going to be strapping on. Now, for me personally, you put a case that big out there and toss a chronograph in, and I’m going to move right on along. However, this watch has one thing that’s really kind of caught my eye.

That, of course, being the full lume dial that they’ve wrapped into the Shinola White Hurricane. One of the first watches I got for myself back in college (a Lorus) was a full lume dial, and those are fun to see, especially coming indoors after a little bit of sun. Then again, here, I’m a little surprised that they didn’t use a different shade of lume on the hands to make them stand out a bit better from the dial. Perhaps it’s not that big of an issue in practice; we’re working on getting in a loaner to test that out.

At the end of the day, if you’re familiar with the Shinola Runwell Chronographs, you’re familiar with this watch. The big selling points for the Shinola White Hurricane, then, are the fact that the dial is fully lumed, and that you’ve got a titanium case and bracelet helping to cut down the weight. For me, the dial is the star, and the bright white does put me in the mind of a blizzard, which means I’ve got to get my snow thrower ready soon here too. But that aside, you can get your own Shinola White Hurricane directly from them now for $1,500. shinola.com
