Over at Worn & Wound, their resident curmudgeon gives you some food for thought in an interesting read.

The article (here) digs into the reason why some of the big name brands will hit you for four figures (or more), whereas some of the smaller brands that are covered (say, Christopher Ward, Benarus, or Magrette) will come in at a fraction of the costs, offering many of the same features and functions.

That’s not to say there’s not a place for higher-end watches (perhaps that grail you’ve had your eye on).  I think the point of the article is more to point out you really can get a lot of bang for your buck from online retailers.

Very interesting article with many good points, although from what I’ve seen the used watch market is not too kind to boutique watches – which of course is unfortunate and in no way a reflection on the value of the watches. I’ll hazard a guess and say that most people are happy to pay a higher amount of money for the same ETA movement if the watch is sold under a well known brand – or perhaps that is the assumption we make and therefore artificially drive up the price of
    certain brands…

  2. I totally agree!
    However, a watch is not just a machine its history and I hate to say it but a name and unfortunately that counts for a lot. I know there are people that want a watch purely for its function and there are people on the opposite end that want it purely for its name. I think there are a ton of people in the middle that appreciate the history of the brand and what it represents as well as the function of the piece
