Nixon’s The Heat watch is their thinnest waterproof watch. The first limited edition of it appeared on July 13, and now they’re showing The Heat: Team Edition, a limited edition in gold with blue accents, for surfers and skaters.
Nixon is supporting Olympic athletes with new gear, and to that end, they’ve made what they think is the world’s thinnest waterproof watch. The 8mm stainless steel, gold-colored case is definitely one of the thinnest I can recall for a water resistant quartz watch.
The size isn’t impressively gigantic, either. The watch is a comfortable 38mm, large enough to be comfortable for everyone.
But this isn’t some plastic watch. The case is stainless steel. The buttons are stainless steel. The pins that fasten the strap to the case are hex Allen key screw-bars. The only fault I can find is the crystal; the face of the watch is mineral glass instead of sapphire.
Besides the gold and turquoise colorway, there’s a surprisingly useful set of functions.

- Custom timer, with a 60 second “SEND” notification
- EL backlight that can be turned on in any mode by pressing both buttons
This is not a dress watch. This is not a smart watch.
This is a sport watch, with solid timer features to tell you to push yourself across the finish line, in a rugged enclosure that should survive all kinds of punishment, without following the trend of being absurdly large.

- If I could make one design suggestion, it would be: I don’t really dig the double buckle strap. I wish there were straps that weren’t pin and buckle.
- What spoke to me the most about this watch: It’s focused on what it is: an accurate watch you don’t have to re-set, a chronograph, and timers.
