Steinhart: I’m Just Not Into You

January 23rd, 2007 67 comments

pict1569.JPGA big to do about Steinhart over at WuS today. Steinhart sells “homages,” watches that look strikingly similar to well known brands but have enough subtle differences to stand as their own brand. I can support their efforts, but I’m kind of tired of the homages to Rolex and Panerai I see. I think there are plenty of odd, little houses out there that deserve our cash rather than some junk dealers who traffic in Chinese-made crap. Sorry. Ranting.

Swiss Army Watches: They’re Getting Better

January 23rd, 2007 3 comments

Detailed discussion of Swiss Army Watches over at WuS. I’ve actually been quite impressed with some of them, especially their newer mechanical line. What’s your experience been?

Good value for the money and they have gotten serious. They have
been selling mechanical watches for some time and have a three year
warranty.

PaneraiBlog: Guess What It’s About?

January 22nd, 2007 No comments

pod47.jpg

Nice new blog all about the biggest watches on Earth. I’m not a big watch lover, but I love me some Panerai. If I had the dosh and most of their movements weren’t so boring, I’d get one. Best feature? Their Panerai picture of the day. It’s watch porn.

When a Guilloche Ain’t a Guilloche

January 22nd, 2007 No comments

guilloche.jpgChad the Watch Guy caught some shop and home freaks talking about a beautiful “flying Guilloche” on a cheap hunk of watch they were flogging. His response? Bull!

Beautiful patterns are meticulously carved into metal using an old rose machine –one that has not been manufactured in over fifty years. You can count master guillocheurs on one hand, and none have the ability to “mass” produce. Even high-end companies like Chronoswiss stamp their dials to mimic an original guilloche style.

The Rarest Seiko of All

Trust me, people. This Seiko is not worth $1,000 or $3,800. It’s a standard Frankenseiko with a unique face. I don’t understand what this guy is trying to pull, but the Seiko forums have seen this guy pop up over and over again. Very strange.

Crap like this has made me stop using eBay.

What Should Cruel But Fair Buy?

January 20th, 2007 6 comments

Wow. This is a tough one. CBF, one of our readers wants to invest sub-$200 in his first watch. I’d start out by saying the Orange Monster. What say ye all?

A higher-order watch will be in my possession this year. My first such purchase–I have never owned anything but crap watches. I could really use some recommendations.

It looks like the sidebar was screwing up the forums considerably so I took them out. Hopefully things look better now.

The Rolex GMT: A Love Story

January 20th, 2007 2 comments

gmtmaster.jpg

Fratello found a great story on GMTs throughout history. Nice read.

The 6542 “Pussy Galore!” I didn’t know that it was called that then. Heck, I hadn’t even become a regular on any forums yet and didn’t really know much about no crown guards models or gilt vs. matte dials. But I did know that I really liked the look of the watch with that mini GMT hand and beautiful glossy “chocolate” dial. And that plastic bezel insert–Humina-humina…

DPHMI Black Stealth Knowledge Skeez

January 20th, 2007 6 comments

dphmi_blackstealth-thumb.jpgAhem… excuse me, is that a Panerai? Hell no, it’s a hunk of crap, my good man.

Check out this limited edition wristwatch from DPHMI called the Black Stealth Knowledge. It looks like an Officine Panerai wristwatch. The case has an almost identical look to that of Panerai watches. It looks pretty good to me. It allows less affluent buyers to have the look of a Panerai without the price tag. In fact the price tag is only $199 US and it is not a knockoff. It even has an automatic movement like the real thing.

Nike+Watch

January 20th, 2007 No comments

ipodnikeno.jpgI really like the Nike+iPod gear – it works well and is completely mobile and usable. I just hope this odd watch from Nike meets my already high expectations.

Nike has decided to go out on its own (apart from iPod) and create a watch with, well… time in mind. This sleek, dark mystery was created using the same wireless technology to display the dat on one’s wrist rather than on one’s DAP.

What Am I Paying For?

Sell fake Panerais

A good thread on the Big Watch Forum discusses the problem most watch newbies have with paying $4000 for a hunk of steel. I’m pretty much past that stage, but just remember watch fans: you and potentially five other people in your metro area will be able to recognize and appreciate that hunk of steel for what it really is…
Not to sound like a complete idiot…

Review: Scorpion Watch Company Reef Diver

January 20th, 2007 10 comments

img_4467.JPG
I’m excited about small companies building their own watches. Making a watch is difficult. It requires design, logistics, and negotiating experience as well as an appreciation of risk and the ability to sell something that the world thinks it doesn’t need to picky, picky watch nuts.

That’s why I was so excited to see Scorpion Watch Company, really a pair of guys out in Denver, were creating a watch brand. This is sort of like a pair of roommates creating a microbrew beer or building a bar together — it’s fun, it’s cool, and it’s potentially lucrative.

So how does the Reef Diver fare? Extremely well, I’m pleased to report.

Hilarious Watch-Foolery

January 6th, 2007 No comments

damn_fool-t-link.jpgTrust me… you have to read how this thread ends over on WuS…

A friend of mine who is quite well off financially asked me about watches a month back. Until then he had always worn a Swatch of one kind or another. He decided to invest in a quality watch and didn’t want to buy a Rolex. As he had just watched Casino Royale I recommended an Omega Seamaster. He went out and bought himself an Omega Seamaster Racing Chronograph and a Rolex Submariner (the sales agent had managed to convince him that the Sub was the ultimate status symbol for a person who works in the city). An overall spend of just over £5,000.
